My original manuals show the indicator can mounted to the brace member near the old style voltage regulator. At harness strip out it was located bolted on the steering column attachment bolt at the dash. The connecting wires are very period (bakalite plug) and correct colour coded wires in a moulded sheath running out to engine bay (which I cut so I don't know where exactly it went)

Is there a legal requirement for it to be in the car cabin for an audio check that it is working?

There should be some type of indicator for the driver to tell when they are on. As long as there is a light/lights in the dash/binacle (or on the end of the indicator stalk on early models) that's all is required.

I don't think the sound of the flasher unit would be enough anyway over the background noises.

The can is more usually located inside the cabin so as to keep it dry.

Can't remember what my `61 850 had 40 years ago, but in all the Minis i've had since (including `64 850) it was under dash near the pedal box.

My 63 was under the dash.

I notice with a lot of mini manuals that a lot of images are from the very early days 59,60,61)and were pommy sourced for these very early cars, so one needs to read in a lot of stuff to account for very early differences.

An example seems to be the brake intensifier for the Cooper 997 discs, they harp on about it like every car was fitted with them over a page or so, but the Oz cars didn't I believe apart from a few rare examples (maybe pommy imports). It is just a quirk sometimes you find with the manuals.

Thanks guys - after cleaning up the old wire its is in good nick and plenty long enough to follow the original route back out into the engine bay and to the point in the main loom where the three wires exit for the connection. Just need some insulated male connectors if there is such an animal.

Edit - yep Dicky Smithy choice of transparent red, yellow or blue pkt 5 for $2.98
