Post subject:  what lubricant?

said the actress to the bishop.....

The 45DCOE weber i bought was previously used for an off-road buggy and was consequently filthy. Needless to say i have pulled it to bits to get all the dirt out of it and fit the bits in the rebuild kit. I even pulled the spindle bearings out to degrease and get all the sand and grit carried by the grease out. All nice and clean now.

So my question is - do they need grease or some other kind of lubricant?

according to the exploded diagram in the Redline rebuild kit, there should be some kind of seal over the outside of the bearings but underneath the big washer, but my carby did not have them, hence the dirt in the bearing grease.

Anyone have seals like that over their bearings, but under the washers?

Finally the rebuild kit seems to have way more o-rings than i need, a mysterious ball bearing (not out of the needle), two leather washers, but no new spindle seals to go under the bearings :? is this common seeing as Redline sell the kit for either 40 or 45DCOE?

cheers
michael

My Haynes Weber book says to use a little grease on the spindle bearings. The seals you are looking for are the leather washers (called dust cover) you have mentioned. As you have said, they go in the housing, over the bearing, then a spring and then under the big washer.

There should be 2 ball bearings. They are the accelerator pump delivery valve balls, go under what are called stuffing balls (bits of rod) with a retaining screw at the top.

Check your diagram. Good luck.

hmmm only got one ball, and there were not any springs under the big washers, and i have not pulled that part of the accelerator pump apart as yet.

thanks

I have to wonder whether the complexity of Weber's is worth it.. all those bits, valves, jets, springs, etc.. makes you appreciate the simplicity of the SU.

Ah... but the spindle bearings go on forever. UNLIKE an SU.
And jetting them is not voodoo science like it is with SU needles.

I hear you there. I've had to rebush approximately all of the SU's I've ever owned.. Bright idea that design was.

Go to your local bearing supplier and ask for the same bearing but with dust seals (Black sides, not metal or debris type). This will ensure washability of the engine, no leaks for tuning, nor dirt getting in.
