Post subject:  H4 Headlights - UPDATED with schematic
Got some H4 7" headlights out of a Nisan Patrol from the wreckers this morning with all the plugs, globes and rubber cups -$10 each. Not 100% sold on them though with the flat fronts. Trouble is the curved fronts like the original Lucas are seal beam :evil: and there were none two the same. At least I can now wire up the plugs to suit any way and if I find anything better can swap later I guess.

Just been out looking - I want the ones with the built in fuse and Supercrap only had one and the packet had been opened the the little bracket was missing. Repco never heard of them with fuses and Diky Smithy only had the same as Repco.

The one with the 2x 30A blade fuses is a New Era NLR-132.
p/no on the box I have (from SuperCrap) is 57-70012.

Do you put a relay on both High and Low beam or just High - reading on another forum and they were talking about only doing the high beam.

Also the plugs I got today are labled 'ground' obvious what that does, and 'drive' and 'pass' - I presume that would be high and low respectively?

I think it might be drive for low, and pass for high. I've heard them called passing lights as you once flashed your highbeams for passing.......

You can run two relays, one for low and one for high, or just one for high, but as you are allready going to the effort of wiring it in, a changeover relay is probably the best idea. It has two output contacts, one is wired for low, and the other for high. Easier wiring too than buggerising around with low and high coming from different points on the car. The same 12 volt feed provides for both low and high.

Does anyone know if anyone actually makes 7" H4 lights with a spherical lens as opposed to flat?

Low beam on a Mini pulls nearly as much juice as high does, if you only do HB the headlamp and dipswitch still see lots of current.
Easiest I reckon to use a proper double headlamp relay- you just cut the blue/white and blue/red wires near the fusebox, splice the relay in, then use 4mm² cable or better for the 12V supply (from battery cable) and earth connection onto body.
The New Era one is fused, most of the others you would (should) add a separate fuse(s). Don't run the 12V+ from the Mini fusebox- it's not rated for the headlamp load.

H4s have flat glass for a reason, they didn't make them flat just to look different, they are flat to focus the light correctly.

The Classic Motoring ones can be considered more-or-less flat if you're comparing them with Lucas domed lights. They have a bit of a curve to them but as said, most H4s seem to be flat compared to sealed beam. Not as flat as some aftermarket H4s, but still don't look like Lucas lights. On my car I put some perspex headlight protectors on which look the biz, and are domed so it hides the H4s :)
