Post subject:  takin rust out need some help
i juz have a few rust bubbles appearing and want to sand them out is it better to use sandpaper and what type would be best for the job

Where is the rust?

Is there paint over the rust? If so, I'd use paint stripper on that area, or just sand the paint off, then remove as much of the rust as you can with a fairly coarse sandpaper. Sand about an inch around the area of the rust to make sure you get it all, then once you think you've got most of it out use rust converter on the area.

After that prime the area, then sand it back using a fine grade paper, re paint..

Unless you've got a 2pac professional paint job or something.. in which case I'd get it all done professionally.. it'll cost you though.

well i took abit off from the gutters and it is worse then juz a few bubbles it seemed to spread in the gap of the gutter and in the lil lip bit on the side *sigh* might have to get it the resto done after all

I think you would do better to use sandpaper to "sand" them out because trying to use plain sand just doesn't work, although your finger tips will get really soft.

before you do anything involving painting/body work you should run it past mini_mike on here. hes a "pro" and he will tell you the "right" way to do things.

well theres bubbles in different places of the car, if it can be cut out and welded then that be better but if some places can juz be sanded back and puttyed then thats fine

After this sanding out if you find holes, open them up to good metal then weld a patch in. Then rust convert before any other steps.
Just bogging alone over rust holes lasts 12 months. How do I know this? i'm a rust expert- I owned 2x 265 hemi Valiants.... :lol: :lol:
That's when I bought a MIG welder- to fix them properly. 8)

well ive found lil holes in the metal but ive put rust converter over the top while i sort out what to do next but what u mean open them up

A little rust often hides a lot of rust. Investigate before you do alot of work that just rip up later, Take it back to good metal before covering it up even if you have put rust converter on it.

an well ive put it back to clean metal but with the holes i cleaned out the best i could
