Fellow Ausminiers......... got the sender unit that is specific to my Smiths Temp Gauge yesterday. When i fitted it and took Slidey for a run it is still reading the same temp as before with the existing sender unit. Now what i am wondering is does the gauge have to be calibrated in any way???????. Thoughts and/or ideas anyone????

maybe that's what temperature the engine is running

I'm just stirring, there isn't any calibration in standard mini guages that I know of

I don't know the background, but maybe you could go to one of the radiator places that offers a free check-up and innocently ask them to lend you a thermometer you can stick in the radiator and see what the running temp is compared to the guage

Is it skyrocketing! I bought a gauge for my moke and where it plugs into the head, I used there connector. It sky rocketed, on going to a mini place, they said that if you dont have the right connector tho the head it will skyrocket, he gave me one for five bucks and it worked perfectly!

Guys, thanks for the responses.... i went to see Matt Read a few weeks ago and the gauge was reading in the early 90's but the radiator thermometer was reading about 71-72 degrees.......... it is still the same...... although the adaptor i bought does not allow the prong of the sender to protrude into the block very far. The sender unit appears to have a tapered thread which is kind of odd

No it doesn't have to be calibrated. I would test it in boiling water. I have never had to do it but it should be possible. The sender would have to be earthed to work like that.

it is a squre thing behind your spedo has a few wires going to it. if it is the incorrect one this can happen

i think there is a number on the gauge at the back or on the front can't remember cross reference it with you local mini person in the know

Do you have a 10V regulator on the back of the speedo? It supplies constant 10VDC to the fuel gauge and temp gauge. Both will read way high without it.

Barney doesn't have one so he has this problem, at least I know what it is..

Doc, will check that to see if it is the correct regulator. The temp gauge seems to be working properly, although i can'y seem to get the gauge to read full no matter how much fuel i put in!!!!!!

Get a V meter and check what's getting to the temp gauge from the regulator. If far from 10V, find another.
Wombat was building electronic ones, cheap. I'd PM him if you need one. He's up in banana bending land, too!
