hey
well blue slip is only 2 weeks away, i need to have my rusty sill fixed, myself being a boat builder cant weld to save my life, i need a quick fix option to get me sorted,

1options are (money saving)
mixing in iron fillings in with my bog to create a surface that a magnet will stick to,

2glue a steel plate over the sill

3 or the exspencive choice which is have the new sill welded on, this is also a safer option but i really cant afford it,

there is enough steel there to for a strucural purpose but at this point in time i cant afford it,

Most inspectors have been in the game for a while,
and it will cost you even more to bog it, fail, fix it properly & re-inspect it.

It's not that pricey just to weld in a sill

honestly....do you think this actually works?!?

The percentage of BOG will by far out-weigh the percentage of metal. No magnet will ever stick to this kind of mixture.

Surely this is just an old mechanics tale? :lol:



If you want to bodge it up......fill any holes with aluminium foil, and bog over it. Sand and shape to the original profile, and paint it.

I have done this years ago on a mates dodgy old Corolla. We used whatever we could to fill rust holes, even empty ciggy packs we found in the boot! :lol: Passed rego didn't it!!! :P

Buz

Dont go to a blue slip with shonky or shoddy repairs - you can spot it a mile off. Just dont do it.

Two weeks might be your deadline but its not an absolute. Perhaps leave it a bit longer until you can afford to have it done properly or someone on here kindly offers to help you with the welding.

The down side is that once the inspector spots either the rust or the shoddy repairs, he/she will go looking for other problems - human nature kicks in.

I had big rust spots in the floor pans so I cut the old ones out, and as a temporary measure glued some side panels off computer cases down as new floor pans, threw the carpet back over and passed the blue slip the next day no worries :lol: It was only a temporary measure though, it's got proper pans now.. I guess it depends on who inspects it and how lenient they are.

I've heard about that iron fillings, or using steel wool mixed with bog, not sure if it does actually work with a magnet...

Steel wool will work if you shape it right and only have a very thin layer of filler over it. And it will rust out about 10 minutes after you sell the car. :lol:

A mate had a old Holden once, when the sill rotted he used a loaf of bread as filler, and a nice sculpture of bog over. 8)
Not that I condone this sort of approach.. the mechanical characteristics of bread are pretty low! :lol:

But on the plus side..............Ants will come in and eat the bread so you don't have to worry about the bread causing any issues later on with mould etc!!! :wink: :P

your best bet is to get a little pice of flat steel plate, bend it to teh right shape and surely u know someone witha welder?? workmates cousins uncles mates mates parents cousins uncles??
just weld the plate in, paint the sills with a stone guard down both sides and hey presto

but 260 is very steep,

thats a hard one mate, just mig in some repro ones. then its done and you never have to worry about it. I did mine with the car stripped and upside down, was a piece of cake. Doing it to a completed car will be harder but possible just the same. Just be sure to pull up the carpet and deadener its otherwise you will set fire to it.
I found it easier to drill out the spot welds from the inside. remove the old sill and use self tapping screws to get it nice and flush, then plug weld the holes you just drilled and the screw holes. but it just depends what you want to do.
No easy way out, you have 2 choices the right way or the other way.

i wish i had a pit, the car is complete a bloke who i know said he can do it but he is unsure about welding it while so close to the ground and while upside down,

he is a better boat builder than me, and qualified :wink:
