When all you show car people take all the sound proofing out of the engine bay and paint it all up with chrome and sh!t, how does this effect the noise when driving? Is it a noticeable difference without the soundproofing on the fire wall?

Ive got the stereo turned up to loud to noitce..... Plus the exhaust makes a big enough racket anyways....Im sure it would make a slight difference, but its not like Minis with sound proofing are as quiet as a Maybach.... They are still noisy cars regardless. |

This morning I've just fitted insulation to the underside of the bonnet, and am also putting the same stuff on the firewall. Black vinyl covered felt. Probably a futile attempt to reduce some noise, and with the firewall, just maybe reduce a little bit of heat coming through to the cabin - but it will have naff all effect on that anyway. Did it more for the looks really. Covers up the hole behind the instrument binnacle and helps hide the wiring a bit. The underside of the bonnet looks really nice now too. Haven't got a radio - so might just get a louder muffler and keep the windows open!

Thanx, Peter. I'm more looking at it from the perspective of having existing shabby sound proofing in the engine bay and how different it would be without it.

i dont know about the insulation in minis but in the celica it changed quite a bit, the celica had no insulation at all, the noise inside the cab was friggen loud, i felt like wearing ear protection when driving. but installed a heat absorbing foam cover to deflect the heat from the out side and try to absorb the heat inside the engine bay, the sound changed alot mainly the type of noise, before it was a rattley, tinny noise, you could hear every tap, ding and rattle. now the rotary can live up to mazdas saying piston engine go bang,rattle pop, mazda engine go HHHMMMMMM all in all 40 bucks a meter its a good investment |

Understand. Then why not take out the crappy stuff, run the car for a few days without it and see if it becomes a problem to you - you can always fit some later. It's not difficult. Peter

Yea rip out the old crappy stuff and run it if it too loud you could just buy some new stuff fit and if it then still to loud there's some great stuff at MiniSport AU, that I've jsut used along my floor and firewall reduced the heat/noise by heaps and kept the stereo sound in the car as well and reduced vibrations |

I pulled out my old worn out insulation and put in the new minisport gear plus the under bonnet, vinyl clad gear and was well impressed with the drop in noise. I was running a k&n filter at the time, right next to the firewall, so could really notice the difference. 100% improvement imo. Also covered the large hole behind the speedo and stuffed more behind that. More on the inside behind firewall, above and below dash, and was very happy with the noise reduction.. Like buztoy said it takes alot of the tinny noises out and also don't have to have the stereo full boar to drown the engine out! I made a fire wall insulator out of 20mm thick felt and stuck vinyl to it. It made a big difference to the noise in the cabin and made the firewall area a lot neater. I have a template which I made from an orginal 1965. |
