I looked at a mark 2 S the otherday for sale. On the plate it had YG2S4____ AND _/70 also _ seating capacity. There was no paint colour or engine number, is that right for mark 2's. Thanks

Hmmmm. Never seen that and done a lot of judging at shows. But then who knows, I have seen some bodgy stuff done by BMC, like a one owner Mk 2 S without a RHS petrol tank, and fitted with boot matting instead of a board, and it was definitely a genuine shell. The plate should be stamped in reverse, ie the lettering is raised to the touch. Only other option is that it was a blank plate that someone has bodgied up. Check all the usual signs and make sure the shell is genuine at least. If you get me engine and chassis no's I should be able to date it for you within a couple of weeks. G

The ID plate should be an ADR type plate and should be fixed to the body on the bulkhead immediately behind the brake booster. It only shows CAR number ie YG2S4 plus CAR number and the month and year of manufacture. There should be further info on the radiator surround panel. This should show the BODY number and an internal production code possibly M 06 but not 100% certain on the code for a MK2. The BODY number should be approx 500 less than the car number. If CAR No is YG2S4 1234 then body number would be 734 (1234-500). BMC numbering starts at 0001 for the BODY number and 501 for the CAR number. Why???? Just another one of those BMC mysteries. There is no mention of engine numbers. If I remember correctly the paint type and colour, code etc should be on a stick on label attached somewhere on the RH front part of the car maybe on the bonnet latch panel. The paint type shows what should be used to refinish (ie repair) the paint. Original paint would most likely be baked enamel. MK 1's and earlier cars prior to 1969 manufacture had the BMC type plate with a bit more info (but no build date) attached to the bulkhead behind the master cylinders. Hope this helps RonR

The car is a genuine shell has all the correct tags and brackets ie, bootboard brackets, right side breather tabs, three tabs on the parcel shell, hole for right side breather line, spotwelded flares and right hand tank bracket, and heater brackets, hole under rear seat for fuel pump breather, etc. It has Matching body numbers match,approx 500 difference. The plate matches the radiator shrowd, the numbers are punched in not raised. Too me everything is genuine factory tabs and brackets, etc. Is this plate just another BMC mystery or is it meant to be stamped. The owner does not wish to give out numbers. Thanks

Not sure what your saying here. I'm a little confused. I assumed that that you didn't want to give actual car No and build month. But from your last post you seem to be saying that no car number or build month is on the ADR plate. Even if all the 'S' extra brackets, holes etc are there its still relatively easy for someone with the knowledge to create a MK2 S. Since no engine No was allocated to each car as per MK1 S cars then anyone with a MK 2 engine can create a car. I'm not suggesting this is the case here but it is something to be aware of. Another thing to check is the gearbox case. On the gearbox case under the starter motor there is a raised boss and this should have the engine number stamped on it. 9FXEY etc if its the original gearbox case. I think there was another post recently about ID plates and one post referred to some cars coming from the factory without some info and these details were added later at Liverpool. You will have to do a search. Regards RonR

The option was only available on Mk 1 models and was no longer an option by 65. In fact it went the other way. ie came with 2 tanks but had to be ordered without the RHS tank, but then it came with a Cooper bootboard and subsequent brackets. G.

Hi, Referring to the Mark 2 S I looked at for sale,the reason I did not give the numbers out is it is not my car. The numbers on the plate had been punched in, not pressed out as you mentioned. They did match the radiator cowling and the numbers behind the master cylinder were approx 500 different. Has anybody else seen a plate punched in. Thanks

The ADR plate info is in raised lettering but the car no and build date are punched in using letter and number stamps ie recessed. Build date month/year in top LH corner under MORRIS and car model code and number beside MORRIS along the top. Rest of the ADR info is below this and in raised lettering. Sounds like a genine ID plate to me. Regards RonR

Thanks for your help RonR. The plate is as you mentioned in your last listing, raised every where except for MORRIS YG2S4_____- _/70 4 Capacity Thanks again for your help and knowledge.
