is anyone running a 2 inch exhaust, and if so what muffler etc are you using?

also do they make mini mufflers in 2 inch like RC-40 etc?

i need a legal quiet exhaust with a nice note in 2 inch..

My car passed Regency with the exhasut system that came on the car when I bought it. 2 inch pipe into a Lukey, straight through muffler. My car is pretty sedate in the exhaust sound department as you would know I think.

Thinking about it LCB into 2inch into Lukey straight thru is terribly big for an 850.....

Mine has just got a set of LCB's with a 2" M/S pipe into just a cheap no-name muffler. I just got mine done at a regular muffler shop - they did a #%*& job with aligning the extractors but luckly I was able to fix it. Apparently they had done mini's before.

Just be careful where you go to get it done. I don't think mine is too loud at all because all I can hear from inside the car is induction noise - can't hear the exhaust note at all.

All I can hear is supercharger noise and induction noise. :D

From what I understand, any system with a bore size larger than 1.75 inches is less effective - not enough back pressure.

Some minis work better with bigger exhausts, some with smaller.
It all depends on what you have under the bonnet

Like chongs... 2" was a shed load better than 1 3/4"

Dyno proof?

I think it has a lot to do with cam over lap. Big cams need backpressure where as the smaller ones do not. Or the other way around, but thats the general idea.

Either way I think we can safely say that the exhasut and extractors on my car were TOO big for a stock 850, oh hang on, it had a huge 1.5 SU.... Hi performance!

I've heard it has a lot to do with cam timing as said above. And it's not just the diametre that you should think about but the length (which affects the total area of the exhaust) and the type of extractors. Like Supa-pipes or Maniflow big bore 3 into ones (HUGE!) or the normal LCB type ones.

Of course, me not caring about absolute performance, I just bolted back onto my car what came off, but with more cc's :D .

Yes it was. Around 5HP worth at crank on his 1330 with RE13 cam and 45 Dellorto.
So, why not- I put one on my 1360 (RE282 cam and 45 Dellorto). Not dynoed yet, but I can feel the difference from 3500 up. 8)

well a too large exhaust will get more max HP but will suffer in torque spread as i understand it..

i dont think 2" is too big for my motor considering its size.

i have a great exhaust on my blue mini, its nice when you have the windows down, but windows up its quiet..

i want something like this, i dont want people to hear me coming or have any hint whats lurking beneath the bonnet.

Hmmm.

Well I don't consider my car 'loud' but I could hear my dad starting it then driving off in it last Thursday while I was in te shower. Possibly not really quiet enough?

What about the twin muffler systems? I've seen some exhasut which have a little hotdog then after that a say RC40 or a Lukey or something?

Oddly enough my parents like my car sounding the way it does. The clubman sounds better IMO but different. And they can tell when I come home late at night afterwork that's me not some undesirable trying to rob the place or something.

I get the same thing mate.... there's something about an A-series engine with a decent muffler and piping that's unique sound. I must say I love the sound of my system wouldn't want to change it, 3-1 with a rc40 and 1 3/4 piping

Not all cars do well on a 2" system, it all depends on carb tuning, chokes etc. Capacity of the engine has nothing to do with it. It's all about power production and how well your engine breathes and what cam you are running. If you make anything under 70-80hp flywheel, then I would consider a 1 3/4 system before throwing on a 2" system (that means dyno time required). A 2" is noticeably louder than 1 3/4 (at least 10% or more)

Regarding RC40: it's a brand name made in the UK by Competition Silencers. Like many things it is now used to describe mufflers of the straight through variety for minis (much like Scotch is used to describe sticky tape)

If you ask many exhaust places they will not know what an RC40 is. What you want is a straight through muffler with perforated internal pipe. If it's a center exhaust you want a center in/center exit. If it's a side mount you want something like a Lukey. Generally the smaller the muffler volume (Redback is small compared to Lukey) the more noise it makes.

If it's still too loud you can throw on a hot dog before the muffler.

Beware that there are 1000 different types of "straight through". You want one with no restrictions like baffles crossing over the center of the muffler, little ducts that look like tiny air scoops in a vortex pattern or anything like that. pick up the muffer and look inside, it should be a mesh like pipe inside the muffler and the diameter stays constant from intake to exit.

Or, just buy a Lukey brand name...

Foot Note: bigger exhaust requires the whole system to be revised for it to work. Example: you can't put in a 2" exhaust on a car running a single 1 1/4 SU. The intake is far too small and gas travelling throught he exhaust will be too slow. Example 2: (within reason) you can't throw on twin 1 3/4 SUs and a 2" exhaust onto a stock 998 with a stock 998 head with a stock cam. It's not sucking or blowing hard enough through the engine for gas to pass through the ports and valves in the head at a fast enough speed through the big intake and exhaust system. All you do is lose torque throughout the rev range.
