Post subject:  New mini confusion

Hey guys i need some help.

Ive always loved minis but i dont know anything about them, [well not enough anyway] and i have recently bought a '64 mini. But thats all i can determine about it. It has under-gone a reasonably shabby restoration by the previous owner(s) and at has bits n pieces from everything.

I was just wondering if there is a way to determine what model it is, because iv been told that its missing the correct badges and after some light reseach im not sure if its a MkI cooper or standard mini.

Any help or advice would be much appriciated thanks.

Throw some pics up, for starters.

Give us some body numbers.

Being a 64, and an Aussie Mini, it should be an 850.
Therefore have sliding window doors, and a 'pudding stick' gear lever.
These are the more obvious signs of an 850.
Welll... an original 850 at least.

well i dont have the body numbers atm, its getting a service n il get some pics up shortly.

But this is what i know bout it, it has the 1100 in it, repainted a in a dodgy blue, does have the sliding windows, it only has the speedo and wooden dash pannel. and the interior has been redone completely. Not sure what you mean by the gearstick but wen i get some photos up loaded shud explain a whole lot.

Have a look on the stamped plate rivetted to the firewall , it'll have a car type or similar on the top line , YMA etc most likely but could be different , if you give us that number we can say what model it is .

well where do I start

it looks like you have a later remote style gear stick this would make sense as the 1100 would have had a remote box.

the photo size doesn't help much but you do have the cooper bumper over-riders (you can buy them anywhere now) *so that doesn't mean squat*

I don't think a MK1 cooper had flares but I can be corrected.

codes for body and engine

Yeh pics are dodgy, and im guessing the previous owner just bolted on some MkIII flares, there dont look like there fitted too well

Yup, no flares on a Cooper, but they look like the 75 dollar jobbies from here in melbourne. They're common as the proverbial. Need a lot more information starting with the I.D. Plate prefixes.

Also did the doors on all minis come with the chrome rimed windows? Mine has the holes but no chrome

That's a good sign of something maybe.

Australian Cooper 997 and 998's had chrome stripping around the doors. Very special and different to any other type on any other Australiam Mini.

There was I think 6 (or twelve on early cars) rivets attached to these holes which clipped the chrome trim on. The chrome is rocking horse poo, but the clips can be had for about 20 cents apiece from the UK, as can the chrome trim too if you have the cash.

Just need the body number off the plate, not the chassis number. It will say "YKA2S1" or similar. There are other things to look at as well, but this is a start
