Post subject:  Fitting windscreen locking stip + carpet
The panel beater instaled the windscreen w/o refilling the D'mastic around the edge + the rubber is not entirely straight - the bottom line is that it leaks.

I wanna avoid paying the $80 for O'briens to remove the locking strip, put d'mastic in and replace the strip, but I dont have the special locking strip tool either. How hard would it be to replace without the tool?

Oh and would removing the strip, applying d'mastic on the outside and reinstaling the strip be a good idea or should I rather remove the windscreen completely and reinstal the rubber properly (the w'screen gasket and the locking strip are in good condition).

Oh and what are the locations for the Cooper S (maybe others) carpet clips (these are the little 3 piece clips that held the early carpets). I know that two are on both sides of the crossmember on each side but what about the other 4?

The carpets had two clips in the front (4 for earlier cars) and two in the back either side of the floor pan for front and back. These are available from a place called Woolies in the UK (not the supermarket) for about 3 bucks a pack of 10 (30 pieces in each pack)


I bent a infil tool up myself out of a piece of stiff wire. Once that was done (3 minutes) the infill took 5 minutes to put in.

I looked at one of the tools on the web and bent it up the same, into a diamond with it's width set by the infil strip.
I twisted the ends together and used a vice-grip as a handle. Some rubber grease and that was it.

I was just about to mention making your own.. I can't say I've had any experience with windscreens yet.. But having a look at the tool here on ebay:

Re carpets - I've got the clip and ring set and my car already has 4 clips installed - one each side of the crossmember. But I dunno the exact locations for the other clips.

Yeah that's it I believe for most cars. Early cars (Cooper 997 & 8 ) had two clips for'd of the crossmember, not sure about the rear though.

Ok done, the tool was really easy to make and worked a threat - thanks Mick.

Oh and found out the correct positions for the carpet clips - 2 forward and two rearward of the crosmember - each side. They sit just above the sill vent indentations.
