Refering to MK1 door handles with the lever inside.

Has anyone attemted to tighten or replace the spring inside the lock so the handles don't droop anymore? I know new locks are available but was wondering if it is "repairable"

Yep there is a coiled flat spring that is inside the lock assy... Mine had actually snapped and caused the handle to sag. I replaced the springs, I bought them BRAND NEW back in the day... from Mini Kingdom. Its not something that u can adjust, u need to replace the spring.

I had the locks out when i was painting my car yrs ago. Was a bit of a stuff around job.

That's the ticket. If replacing in situ, make sure you stuff some rags in the bottom of the door so that if it flies off, you won't spend hours hunting for it.
I'll never forget dropping one once.........had to take the door off and tip it upside down to get the bugger out :twisted:

They are called "clock springs". They were about $5 a pair last time I bought them about 8 years ago.

I have found some doors where the droopy handle was infact caused by the shaft and mechanism hole being worn / elongated.

Too many heavy hands pushing the external handle too far down had caused the hole in the mechanism (that the shaft passes thru) to become semi-rounded. Can be dodgy-fixed by packing the worn area with a pop-rivet stem..... or fixed properly...

You are sooo right here. If you're a little devious, remove the handle, grip the square in a vice and give the catch end a small twist with a Crescent (shifter in Oz). Works a treat!
