MAPP torch or an Oxy set. Seeing I've survived this long without an oxy (but could have used it umpteen times) and they say MAPP is hotter than acetylene and I can only see myself doing brazing on the Mini in the near future but looking at the capital set up cost the MAPP torch is much cheaper option. Who's used both and can tell me the pros and cons of each? |

Mapp will be cheaper in the long run, but its a wider flame so it isnt as concentrated in the one spot and dosnt get as hot as the oxy. I do aircontitiong as a trade and when brazing pipe i will only use the mapp gas when its either way to difficult to get the oxy out or its only a small pipe and there isnt much brazing to be done. The mapp gas would probably braze up to inch and an eights size copper pipe but it would take a hell of a lot longer and the finishing look would be crap house... Personaly mapp is prob the way to go for you unless your going to use the oxy a fair bit. But you can also get an air accetelene and its hotter than the mapp but not as hot as the oxy, and its alot noisier. Cheers Dan |

All round I'd have to say oxy acetylene, I use mine for welding brazing silver soldering and cutting. Mapp gas or a butane torch is better for little jobs, if you never need the big heat it might do you. I got by with a Primus butane torch for years, but refilled the oxy when I had a ring gear to fit.... the butane didn't have the balls for it.

Can't buy them, they are the property of BOC, Aire Liquide or Linde Gas. You rent them, and swap when empty- but I get a few years out of them between fills. 
The rental sucks, but at least it's tax deductible for us contractors.

I think the rental is about $12 a month, plus gas. And obviously there is an oxygen bottle and an accetelene bottle. Then you need the regulators and hoses etc.. They are about another $400 odd. You can buy a map gas for about $20 and then the head which is about $150 odd |

How do they price it? There is a set rental price /pa for oxy, and acetylene bottles. Price varies by size- D (Colt bottles) E (1/2 size) G (full size). I rent Ds because I hardly use it. Costs me $238.39/pa just for rental..... + the gas.

Yeah I looked at getting them form Kennards or similar for the weekend. They charge you that much for the weekend as they assume that you have used the entire bottle and get it topped up by BOC (yeah sure they do, I bet they just weigh it myself and put it back on the floor). |
