Hello all,

I have not long bought my First mini (that i can drive anyway) I was just wondering have many of you guys been defected for much, Or are mini's pretty much left alone??

I know from having a previously modified car and being targeted it all depends on how you drive the car, but certain types of cars are targeted. Was just wondering if the mini culture was one of these cars?

Short answer is no

I presume you are talking about being defected by the police rather than at a pink slip inspection.

Unless any car has obvious defects like bald tyres, substantial rust and other safety issues the police are largely not interested and certainly not targeting a mini specifically. An excessively noisy car will attract attention at that includes squealing tyres, loud exhausts, doof doof's and high revving engines.

What does attract attention is the manner in which the car is being driven and what does attract defects is the drivers attitudes if pulled over for some reason.

Golden rule. Be polite and co-operative with the police officer. They are the judge of fact and its pointless to abuse or argue with them. If you want to challenge the officer's decision then do it through the court system not on the side of the road. In any case all police record details of the offence and driver details such as attitudes. Often, it is also recorded by tape and video.

I am not a police officer and i never have been either. Just older and wiser.

yeah a clean stock mini gets generally left alone. Modified one with P Plates on it on the other hand.

You will also find that the old coppers are keen on mini's because they used to drive them. Never heard anyone complain about the old cop mini's either

Well it doesnt have P-plates on it so I have half a chance.

But it does have the "doof doof" and loud exhaust.

I guess its like anything its the way the car is driven which will attract attention.

I got pinged by a cop once who I reckon was just looking to get his quota up... I was just toodling along in my van, he went past going the other way, did a U turn and pulled me over, breathalysed me then looked the van up and down and said "how low is it".... and gave me a canary and a $160 fine cos the exhaust was too low....

nup..... it was pretty big, and was only about 6cm from the ground, but I wasn't doing anything wrong that made him pull me over.

If the car is unroadworthy, you're breaking the law and you deserve a defect - I would have prefered to avoid the $160 fine tho

i got done for this too.. the extractors were hanging too low (less than 100mm from the road), but i didnt get a fine, just a canary and had to get it fixed, then checked over @ vicroads.

funny thing is, i thought i was going to get done for being too noisy, as this is what drew the cop's attention to me in the first place. oh I also got done for non-engineered harnesses, but that was my fault!

i got the hydro pumped up to try and get the clearance, but no luck. took it down to vicroads anyway, and the inspector only checked the exhaust at the muffler, which was clearing fine anyway, and always was!

I've been defected.
Twice.

Once for tyres. (Police station clearance).

Another for suspension (full inspection - easy peasy!)

As usual Mike and others are spot on. "Rice", manner of driving and then your attitude will determine you and your cars future. In NSW fines do not always go hand in hand with a defect, again the fines usually comes into play with the attitude of the driver.

As for getting stopped, the mini is certainly not the target of choice for the police but in saying that, a policeman who has a genuine interest in mini's may think otherwise
