Post subject: | YG2S2 - Deluxe, K, or Cooper?? |
Ive done a search on the YKG2S2 and YG2S2 body types and come up with an inconclusive result. People have said that it could be this or that, with no definite answers. Knowing that the plate says YG2S2, what would be different between the Deluxe, K, and Cooper (other than engine number) that I could find on the car to know exactly what it is? And I dont mean "bolt on" parts.... the car is 40 years old and could have been completey stripped and rebuilt with different bits at some stage. |

There is no way that YG2S2 is a Mk1 Cooper S. ![]() |

YKG2S2 is MK1 S, YG2S2 was never stamped anywhere, so no..... but they dropped the K on MK2 S's for some reason, and they're YG2S4, which is where the confusion may come from. ...... |

Once again, nobody can give a definite answer. My question was: what exactly IS a YG2S2??? What specs should it have, as far as standard equipment goes. |

Hint.. the G code means it's over 1000cc... so my bet is early Mini K. but it's a `Maybe'. |

I don't think there was a YG2S2... what's your reference? |

No reference, except my `matic is a YA2S5 (the A meaning `up to 1000 cc' according to Morris1100). My Mini Car Clinic book (yeah I know it has errors) doesn't list it. only 2s it shows is YMA2S2 (Deluxe), the M was dropped in 1969 though. Could be late Deluxe but the G is wrong. |

Doc's point isnt 100% valid.... in regards to the engine size, it was originally just under 1000cc. And it's a '68.... All my info is coming from the rego papers and the ID plate |

A "K" is a "1" (YG2S1) Following the BMC code system there should be a 2 and 3 because there is a 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. ![]() I don't know what a 2 is but could it be a poverty model. (Mini Minor? did they go into the Mk2 range?) The way BMC (and then Leyland) worked was to have a normal car like the Deluxe and then have a cheap model like the Mini-Minor and then have an expensive model like the Cooper S. A customer gets conned by the cheap price of the Mini-Minor in the adverts while thinking about the most common model (the Deluxe) and then the salesman tries to sell him a Cooper S. ![]() |

That's the confusing bit. Body: YG2S2, engine: originally 9Y/Ta/H..... now 10Y/Ta/H..... Hydro suspension, no heater, narrow drums Didnt see the original body colour name. I am yet to see this car in person, all the info has been passed on to me by the owner via email. |

^^ not really. My YG2S2 doesnt have the second letter in that list, and it had a 1 litre engine from the factory. |

2nd letter seems to have been dropped when BMC became Leyland, in 1969 or thereabouts. After that, no more M or K. My 1969 Minimatic was YA2S, not YMA2S. Ditto for the `70 one I've still got. ![]() |
