Apparently there are products on the market that boost the RON of your petrol (for if you are somewhere where you can't access 95 or above).

if you want leaded high octane fuel try and get a hold of some avgas. Otherwise shell has 100 octane on tap @ most servo's

Don't buy the boosters, they are a waste of time effort and money. and most have been proven to actually lower high octane fuels octane when added so they often contain little of the extra power

The 100 octane at shell has ethanol in it, so be wary of that. BP Ultimate, i've heard, is actually made to 100 octane, to be carefull if it looses octane if it ever gets tested. All other 98 octane stuff is made to 98 octane.

The first question to ask is, what makes you think that you need higher octane fuel?
If you really need higher octane fuel the best thing is to buy a higher grade at a servo.

There are simple ways to raise the octane level without buying snake oil, toluene is a quick fix if used correctly, the oil companies use it themselves for that reason.

My question is, because the Mini requires a minimum of 95, if i go for a long drive intra-state and CAN'T GET anything higher than 91 at any stations, then what should i carry in the event of that situation?

I'm not intending this for daily use or anything. If i'm in melb, i buy the right octane.

95 is available pretty well everywhere now.
When we did Tassie last year, we took Barney over, because unlike mine he runs fine on 95. No 98 over there, matey!

There are more stations selling 98 octane on the way to Adelaide than you need to stop at in a Mini.

I would imagine going to Sydney would be the same... there are definatly enough Macca's along that road!

Um, the sticker under the bonnet that says RON95. Remember that mine's an import. It pings with anything less.

Looks like you are stuck with 95 then. (Or carry a can of toluene )

Is yours injected? If it has a cat you run a risk with any of the octane in a can boosters.

With normal cars you can knock off a couple of degrees of advance to cure the pinging. (this was why the D25 dizzy has the thumb wheel on it)

Try Octane Supreme 130. Proper lead based fuel additive. Will boost octane rating by at least 5 depending how much you add (5 octane boost all that is allowed by Aus legislation). Not for cars with cats of course.
