Post subject:  What fuel do you use?
I purchased a mini a couple of weeks ago and have had trouble figuring what fuel to use. Its a 998cc clubman engine with twin SU carbs. I currently use regular unleaded with a hint of lead replacement additive.

Anyone know what fuel is best for these minis.

i've always used high octane but some people here use regular. try both and see how you go.

BP Ultimate seems to be the most popular fuel amongst mini owners. I tried using 95 octane unleaded and regretted it, stick with 98. 8)

This is a regular chestnut that pops up again and again whilst stirring up the additive question.

Now, the mini is a 40 year old car with an entirely different engine design to modern cars. It simply needs a higher octane than regular unleaded can provide. Use premium unleaded fuels. The mini actually prefers 98RON fuel but you can get away with 95RON but NOT 92RON.

Now for the additive, unless you are absolutely sure the mini has had its head converted to unleaded petrol (and the conversion is fitting hardened valve seats to the exhaust valves) then use a flash lube additive as recommended. Not a "hint of" but as recommended. I have now seen many many heads that have driven with and without additive and can instantly tell the difference.

Its a small cost and a big insurance and not worth yet another debate on its value.

Hey Pounce.

I use anything 95RON or above - whatever i can get my hands on. Got a dodgy batch the other day... :evil:

Dude, check out the cruise happening in Geelong, the 30th b'day one. A couple of us Melbourne folk are going - feel free to tag along. :D

I've never had problems with Ultimate although people on here will argue the offerings from shell are better - I only go to BP because they are the closest to my house.

I've used them all, I tend to favour Mobil 8000. It seems to give my engine more torque, and it doesn't evaporate out of my tanks as fast as the green and gold 98 octane does.
I used to run Caltex 98, it's OK- but I'm sick of queueing with all the Woolworths tragics and their pitiful 4c dockets... and then finding the 98 pumps all dry. :evil:
Shell? For me, the last resort.... :lol:

Filled up today with BP Ult, car runs much better now, idles have risen up to 900rpm.

Wont be able to come on the cruise as my brakes are not 100%. The car stops and everything but it takes longer than I would like. Need to upgrade to discs. So if anyone has a good front disc brake setup I would love to have it. :-)

i use that but with valve saver. 10ml for 10L .

i've tried others but i find this one really does work best. what ever you do don't use the woolies premium. it sucks, really bad.

edit: on closer inspection i use bp premium. i'll give ultimate a try but it does hurt the pocket even more.

Fuelstar plus 92 RON worked fine, no noticeable differences when using 95 or 98 (have tried them) on both my Cooper S motor (lower than normal compression pistons) and the 1100S Clubby (no idea what's inside). Both cars have fuelstars.

Now my car is supercharged I run 98 (when the car is working and not fouling the plugs...haha... :roll:) I drove it around on 95 for a day, but didn't put the car under any real load. But I am not gonna risk pinging. So 98 it is.

Definitely agree with you on this. Mobil 8000 is by far the best at the moment. Idle smoother, better economy, more low down torque and burns cleaner.

i use shell v power or v power sport i put bp in tiny and he didnt like it much lol same with caltax vortex didnt liek that either so looks like im juz gonna use shell

I agree with the doc aswell...

Had a really bad batch from BP in my old skyline. Filled the tank up and had an instant loss of power, i could feel it even before i left the servo, and on the road it was like i had dropped 2 cylinders :evil:
Ran that fuel dry and after a number of tanks full of Mobil synergy 8000, she finally got her legs back :D
Have never touched the stuff again and never will!! I'm a stubborn boy...
