i think the dashpot oil in my car is leaking.. what does that mean ? i also have the problem that the revs dont drop quick enough.. as it idles high for a bit (between gears) then quickly drops down.. are the 2 matters related ? |

maybe - I would suggest though that for the sustained revs that you check the throttle cable for kinks and wear. Lubricate it with graphite powder and make sure its returning fully and freely. The dash pot oil - it shouldn't leak - not at all. Check the piston for cracks etc. Then use auto-transmission fluid in the dash pot - if you over fill it it will overflow the excess amount the first time it opens fully though. |

Does it loose oil then stops loosing any more? (ie you're over filling). Is your throttle spring(s) letting it shut completely? Make sure the piston, where the piston moves within the carb and where the piston moves within the dash put are clean. |

well i would have assumed steve filled it up before giving it to me.. then when i got the exhaust done they put some more in.. and then i check today and its not upto the like notch/groove bit (if that makes any sense) ... and about the piston.. i have no idea.. and ill check the throttle cable for kinks.. but as far as the revs go it stays reving for longer, the higher the revs.. so it sits there reving higher than it should less when its between the 1st and 2nd gears as opposed to 3rd and 4th... and its not my foot on the accelerator.. ive checked that haha |

Okay Nick - the piston on the end of the rod will displace the excess amounts of dash pot fluid the first time the piston bell rises fully. It wont be up to the top and you need not keep topping it up. It should have some in it though ??? The piston bell should rise and fall freely but with some resistance, thats the function of the piston on the end of the rod. The piston bell should not catch or snag at any point of the rise or fall. Beyond that - spend time checking the state and movement of the throttle cable. It MUST move freely and threads of wire should not snag. A throttle that sticks on is dangerous. Seriously dangerous and at times the only fix is a new cable. |

sticky carb piston would be my guess.. whats your idle speed also? an idle around 1200-1500 would make your car hang onto revs inbetween gearchanges and make it generally stupid. |

turns out it was some sort of blocked or clogged pipe going what i assume is some sort of fuel emmisions stuff... was fixed in 2 seconds |
