Hey All, I just bought a 73 Clubman and it was running great for the first hour, then lost vaccum pressure about 5 minutes from home. Typical. Luckily i got it home ![]() Lucas |

What other signs are there? Black smoke? Running rough? What do the plugs look like? Are they clean? What about the points? |

i had a similar problem with mine, if the carby for some reason has been replaced with a pollution one (dont now why it would as yours wouldn't have pollution gear) then there is an extra tube comming off the top of the fuel bowl on teh side. if that is plugged up, then the car stops. sometimes in the outside lane on paramatta road in peak hour traffic. ![]() |

it won't run because it does not have legs ![]() seriously though, how do you know it has lost vacuum? does it have a dodgy PCV (positive Crankase Ventilation) valve? unsure if they were fitted to 73 model i had a problem with the needle valve sticking to the seat in the float bowl once, it ran until the float bowl was empty then stopped. michael |

The vacuum gauge measures the vacuum in the inlet manifold. So lets think this through, Why is there vacuum in the manifold? 1) Because the motor is running! 2) Because the motor suck air! 3) Because the throttle is closed! Why does it lose vacuum when you press the pedal? Because the throttle is open! All cars lose vacuum when you press the throttle! |

Hey check to power wire to the coil I have had that cause a simular fault. also check that the float bowl need is not sticking by removed the top and see if you can blow air through it with the float fully down then push the float up and see if you can blow any air through it. |

Thankyou heaps for your replies. I had another look inside the carby quickly and realised that there was little fuel residue inside. After some fiddling around, I realised that the feul would only flow through the jet bearing when it was tilted on a 45 degree angle. I think this is the problem. Can anyone tell me why it does this? An how do i fix it? Lucas |

Needle valve and/or seat could be stuffed - I didn't think my old ones looked worn until you compare to new ones. Try some new ones and set up the float properly. If you want, send me a PM and I'll send you a SU carb service manual by email - (best if you have cable ![]() |
