I have a 998 in my mini that i want to have rebuilt and reconditioned. I have no idea where to look to find someone who is able to do this. The engine is 30 years old and never have any work done to it.

Here's a few question for you.

Where in geelong or melbourne can i have this done?
How much can i expect to pay for that?
What does this process involve?

What i want is a reliable engine with a bit of power. Im i better to have a engine ship from the UK? Is anyone ever done this?

Thanks a million
Louis

look up "Bellarine Mini Centre", Poeee is in Geelong, as are a few others...

hang on... I did a quick search, the number is in here http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20972&highlight=bellarine

other than there, Minis Plus and Link Automotive are the ducks nuts in Melbourne. I'm pretty sure Link will sell you and install a changeover motor - drive in and drive out. I've heard numbers like $2200 quoted for rebuilt 998/1100cc motors from mini places, but don't hold me to that

no, bad idea.... no chance of after sales support if theres a problem, no chance of saving any money....

and when you say 'a bit of power', how much are you talking about, are you talking about keeping it basically stock but working a bit better (upgraded cam and carburettor), are you talking about upgrading to a larger capacity (1275+) and all the goodies?

agrees with the Doc here.....also you can spend lots or very little on engines of any size.

Would be very nice to do a 1275+ but all depend on price. Is it something easy to do? sorry to have done...I basically want to make it to the top of some hill around here.

Lets say my budget is $4000 what can i have done to give me some grunt?

gday!

check out north geelong engine reconditioners, they have done a few engine buts for us (me and rodney) in the past. pm rodney (user name rodney...) he will be able to give you more details.

as far as power goes, for an easy bit of kick you can add extractors, different carby and/or different cam. check out the forum section on A+ mods.

Both yes and know. We all know Australian labor are very very expensive compared to many places in the world. If you tell someone in Hong Kong or Taiwan a show car sorta paint job is like Aus$10000-15000+. People will say:"You must be kidding!". It would be about the same figure, but in Hk dollars.

And all it depends if you walk into a caucasian business or not. I got a quote before for a complete respray (including minor panel work) for my mini, they charge Aus$10000 for it, panel work is 3500 and paint is the same 3500, and all the rest are strippping and crap. And I saw their work.

A few weeks ago, I met a person in my company who drove an AE86 sorta car with Levin on the back. His car was bought 2500 and had a panel shop at cabramatta a year ago did his whole car for $1500 except the engine bay. The job is very very good. Also they even fix his bumper for free. Asian business usually doesn't count every single detail they do for you, which is quite good. They rather maintain a good relationship with you and likes you to come back the next time instead of counting every penny they could make from you that they can take from your pocket for once or twice.

So you really have to shop around.

Since most Mini business are caucasian business, it would be hard to compare. So yeah, I can't say it's expensive. It was just sorta suprised me what sorta good second hand Jap engine you can get with $3800  than to recondition a mini engine.

Same with 2nd hand imported Jap cars. The price is doubled here when you can get it only for half the price over there.

As far as i know Bellarine mini center is no more. I bought my mini a year ago from Peter and last time i call he wass no longer there. Make it quite hard to get help here in Geelong. Also the good mini place in Melbourne are only open monday to friday, hard to go there when you work full time. Why nobody buy Bellarine Mini center and keep it running?[/quote]

I have also trouble with the quote feature, hate thursday!!!
