Post subject:  FIRE!

coming back from tweed at about 12:00am last night with 2 other mate in the car. suddenly my brand new 7700cent sound system cuts out, the little red light on the dash lights up and then i see the light. quikly off into the shoulder cut the keys turn off the lights, and i still still see fire so fire extingquisher has the pin pulled out and then the whole mini is filled with dust. doors burst open and it looks like we been smoking the whaky tobaky.
drive home wasn't much fun, no music and the mini was full of this bad smelling tasting dust.

i only vacuumed molly out 2 days ago now i got to do it all again and dust and wipe and everything.

at least i still have molly though.

what happened was the switch for the amp burnt out and the wire attached to it caught on fire.

On the presumption that I wasn't a dead short (ie a bare wire touching the metal body somewhere) this is a classic case where you need to use the correct guage wire for the system as well as having it fused and through a relay.

Take it to a auto electrician and have them wire it for you - it will be cheaper than a new wiring loom.

Fix the wiring, and the seat.

Both are roadworthy issues

I can certainly relate I had the circuit board well circuit piece of plastic behind gauges go solenoid blew on it. Scary when you smoke coming from the dash.

I had the hairy felt stuff behind the heater go up once when welding in a floor patch. Fires are NOT a nice experience...

Sorry to hear about your fire.

Just a word of warning... take extreme measures to get rid of all the powder from the car and wiring system. The powder is very corrosive and makes everything rust. I used to work for a place filling extinguishers and saw nice shiny chrome tools looking very sad after a short period of time. Any powder left behind will stuff your remaining electrics and anything else it comes into contact with.

It is a shame we can't all carry around a vaporising liquid extinguisher, leaves no mess.

cheers
Jim
