Post subject:  got my mini back!

after a month of not having a mini, i now have a mini. yay! we had to replace the head, whcih was cleaned completely and had the valves done properly etc...

but its not running too well. i'm fairly sure its running on all 4 cylinders, but its sounds like a lawnmower and has lost a marginal amount of power. i put new plugs in, correctly gapped, and the cold valve clearance was done in the correct order to the correct gap.

suggestions?

oh and hello everybody :D how is your day going? fabulous i trust

Good to hear you have your ride back!!!

Could be dodgy dizzy lead ? Unplug each one while the car is running, the one you unplug that doesn't make the engine run any different...thats the crappy one. Check to see if the spark is strong.

i know i've got good spark, cos i just put in a good coil (not lucas...) but i'll test the leads and spark to the plugs as well

Just because you have a good coil doesn't instantly mean you have a good spark....You still have a Dizzy + Leads + Spark plugs to deal with before that power becomes a spark.

What sort of manifolds are you using , any chance of a poor seal with the gasket or warped manifold ? Someone suggested a simple test of spraying something on before but can't remember it . I had a warped twin manifold on a previous mini and it would let air past the gasket under load and behave like a pig .

Was that spraying a little "start ya bastard etc" with running, around the mani and seeing if the revs increase?

Nah....in the old days me and the old man used to spit on the manifold gasket to see if you got any bubbles (ewwwwwwgghh). You just need something that is a little gluggy and won't evaporate straight away...a small amount of oil can be good.

Hey Dylan, glad your mini's back in action again - another starter for the big Birthday Bash!!!
If you're down in G-town at all bring it around and I'll have a squizz if you like.

update:

got great spark at all 4 spark plugs, as i took them out i noticed heavy carbon fouling on plugs 1, 2 and 3, and very bad oil fouling on 4. i then dipped a cable tie into the cylinder and it came out soooooooooooooooooo oily!!!

i got on to dad and he reckons either he piston, bore or rings are screwed, porb not the rings cos they are not that old (but bores were not done when new rings went in)

dad also suggested running hotter plugs to try to burn off the oil. but i ahve been through ALOT of oil in the past couple of days so i think its beyond that.

havent gotten on to neville but maybe i should, it will have to wait till next week as i'm pretending to be busy this week
