Post subject:  cant beat the fu*king rust!!!!!
it realli sucks cos when i sand a bit of my mini it just gets surface rust on it.
what am i going to do once i am ready to start under coating it and there is surface rust everywhere? just sand realli quickly? that would realli suck!

I had the same question and the advice from JAM was to either WD40 it (this leaves a residue that prevents air getting to the metal thus no oxidation (rust)) or maxsolve which performs the same job probably better. You then just use thinners or petrol to remove it when your ready to paint. Talk to JAM who has sprayed his car and seems pretty clued up on this stuff...

I was shot down in flames on another board for spraying my shell with WD or Maxsolve, because if you don't wash it all off, your paint won't stick.

Just make sure you give your shell a bath in petrol or thinners before you paint, and you will be sweet. My Clubby is testament to this!

JAM I thought that too, but that would seem pretty obvious that if you applied something to protect against rust that you would have to remove it all to start painting. That is why I decided to use a primer because at least I know where it has gone. But this is more of an issue because of the welding side of things.

Also Mini70 where are you because while bare metal will rust fairly quickly I would have thought that you would have at least a day or two to get some primer or maxsolve or whatever onto it before it started rusting. Do you have a spray setup?

that right JAM looks sweet. i am doing exactly
that on my LS i am rubbing it back to bare metal
atm and use wd40 on it each night after i finish.

the catch here is i am doing it all outside in the
weather and using a car cover, no rust appereard
at all. (Hey Anton you thought you were going to get shot
down...keeping a mini o/s in bare metal is a bit stupid...but
i have no garage space..

yea Chris, that is pretty mAd, but what can you do?!?

Another thing to note with bare metal, is that some people have acidic sweat, so if you touch bare metal, the residue left from your hand will rust the metal quickly.

TIP: Don't touch the surface you have just sanded. It's tempting to run your hand over a nice shinny smooth bare metal surface.....DON'T! This may / will cause rust, and quickly!

Can vouch for the "sweaty palms" bit when I rubbed back the roof of my Landcruiser the next day it was covered in rusty palm prints :cry:

when I did my trade, it was called "rusty fingers"...I suffer from it, and so do you it seems..... :?

I worked with a guy who would touch something, and it would be rusty a few hours later. He was a shocker!!

My hands are quite dry and dont ruin metal like some people at school.
In year 10 we made a metal toolbox from sheet metal (it was pretty good - i can show ya pics if ya want)
and theres this one kid who sweated like a monkey... surface rust on the whole thing and it was gross! :lol:

The moisture reacts with the tiny metal filings that come off thru sanding, so the only way to get rid of it is to do it in a 100% dry space i spose :shock:

i am in adelaide. i dont have a air compressor set up with a spray gun but i hav an air compressor lol can u spray it on by hand? the WD40 on the metal after sanding do u just wash it with thinners or petrol before painting?

big willy u can help me sand it if u get that boored lol it realli sucks and is the worst thing to be doin in this heat!!! :(

Fish oil can be used as well......

Same as WD40....just gotta make sure you gotta wash it off properly aswell.
