Doing a bit of work on a mini & up under the front parcel tray someone has gone nuts with a can of expanding foam, i've been chipping away at it for ages, does anybody know of a solvent that will break in down or melt it? Is it acetone?

Acetone should - some foams are disolved by petrol and therefore are not allowed as floatation in boats so you try that as well

Possibly turps as well, but acetone seems to destroy most things it touches.

Try a few things on the stuff you've chipped out , as wombat said petrol or acetone should work , thinners (just watch the paintwork)does on some as well . If they don't work it might be worth looking at some tins of the stuff in a hardware shop and see if they list a solvent .

polystyrene + petrol = napalm or similar, if I remember correctly...

Reading up on the net, that stuff seems pretty tough.

Acetone can be used against un-cured foam, but if it hard, starting chipping/scraping/grinding away.

Doogie, just wire wheel it- angle grinder + 4" dia x 5/8 bore twistknot wheel. Not the cone shaped one... :wink:

At Rheem we remove foam from overfoamed water heater cylinders with a high pressure water jet.
It works fine but could make a mess in your Mini... :lol:

re the dust, just wear a particle mask. It ain't sharp fibres like fibreglass or asbestos we're talking of here, risks are minimal..
