Can someone tell me how to set the mixture setting on a HS6 SU.. The carb is running a bit to rich... |

Smokie Whats the carby off ?????? has it been on this car before. ????? Firstly check your float level to make sure its not allowing the fuel to rise above the jet height. |

Mike, the carby is on my LS and has been on for awhile now.. I took it to a local mechanic and he isn't sure where and how to adjust the mixture setting... ![]() |

There should be a nut underneath the carb that should screw in and out. The nut will have a little spring above it on the shaft. If you turn the nut clockwise it richens the mixture - anti-clockwise makes it leaner. The nut I'm talking about is the bottom arrow on this pic I pinched off google images. Clockwise and anti-clockwise is taken looking from the top of the carb down. ![]() |

Chris Zerial posted this just yesterday as part of another topic. STEP 1 to tune it screw the mixture screw right up, then down 2 and a half turns, this is a good base starting point. STEP 2 next there is a little button type thing on the side of the carby that u can press that will lift the piston in the carby. STEP 3 with the engine warmed up and running, press this button to lift the piston, if the engine revs rise slightly and the engine dies, its to lean! turn the mixture screw down in half turn increments STEP 4 press the button again, if engine revs rise and stay high, its to rich, wind the mixture screw back up half a turn. you are aiming to press the button so that the revs rise slightly, but then then they drop back down to normal fairly quickly! (nb when i say press the button, you want to hold it up for a bit so u can listen to see what happens as the piston is held up.) there may be other ways that people tune single SUs but this way has always worked very welll for me. |

You might as well get this done properly. Start by taking off the bell and removing the piston. Visually look at the jet and make sure its not badly scored or worn off centre. If it is then no amount of adjusting is going to tune it. Then start to see if its properly centred - the manuals all give a good account of this but .... place the piston back in and just lift it up and down to see if the is any catching - it should rise and fall evenly. The HS6 has a spring loaded needle doesn't it ??? If not it will be checked to make sure the shoulder of the needle is square with bottom of the piston. Then with the jet - wind up the adjusting nut - i think you ill find its the larger nut - until its also perfectly flush with the brass jet outer. Use the choke to make sure it also rises and falls evenly. Check the float level by taking off the three screws on the fuel bowl and follow a manual to do this. Then - re-assemble the whole thing, put in the damper fluid but don't over fill and then follow Chris's method - you should get it right - if the mechanic has a gas analyser then you can get it almost perfect provided it has the right needle taper specifictions for your motor. Go for it. |
