Just ditch it altogether! Cheap, simple, and you'll get more power (maybe 1hp).
Okay, so it's not 'legal' or 'environment friendly' but the emissions would be no different to an older mini.

Hi folks, My car has developed a really annoying rattle which looks/sounds like the inside of the catalytic converter has broken or rusted to the point where there loose bits of metal inside, vibrating and rattling away all the time. My question is - Will any normal garage do the cat for a 1990 Rover, or do I need to go to a mini specialist? I'm inclined to ignore it as the outside of the cat seems pretty solid with no rust visible but I know it'll get the better of me someday and i'll crack and get it fixed. |

Don't you need them to get road worthy on some cars? I was at the understanding that they are required if your car is was newer than 1980 and converted to unleded, or was still on leded fuel. not sure though. |

There are 4 or 5 different cats available. most exhaust shops wont have anything small enough to suit. Or if they do they are lots money. |

take a hammer. and knock the insides out... it'll look like it's attached to everything but the CO2 tester..

Hey, Just to let you know I own a 1989 Rover Mini Mayfair and is run by a carby but I do have a cat installed underneath my car. I got the whole exhasut system replaced and cost me $450. I got a flex pipe, new cat (small enough for a Mini), pipes, brackets, flange, mufflers, chrome tip and installation. Is a 2" pipes all the way. Got it done at Liverpool Exhaust. Give them a call and ask them for a new cat. |

Do what cush said, the testers will have no idea. If you want to replace it though any exhaust place will be able to put a new one in for you unless there is a temp sender or another device that is hooked up to the cpu (but i doubt it on a mini). The third option is to call Steve at Brickworx, he should have a few laying around the place. |

From recollection of being under it on Tuesday night it was flanged with some pretty well rusted-in crud-covered bolts holding everything together I may put up with it until Septemebr to do anything about it as I am going to the UK for the (northern) summer from July-Sep so only about 10 weeks until we go. I guess i could pick one up over there but would probably get funny looks at customs bringing a cat back in my suitcase. |

You can actually buy bypass pipes that have the flanges that fit wherre the existing converter is. Just have a look at some of the UK parts site for a "link pipe" and you'll see a few. Cheaper than a catalytic converter... I just removed mine when I replaced the exhaust, but that said I'm not in NSW, so I don't have annual roadworthys to worry about. |
