I notcied in another thread they people say they are difficult to spray....... The reasons behind this? |

The flecks of metal come out at an angle and if this angle is not consistent throughout the spray, patches of different angled metal results. Basically it just looks wierd. |

The reasons behind this? They can't be touched up if damaged either. The whole panel has to be sprayed and it is quite common for the colours to go off in time when repaired compared to the original colour. I am also told the quality of the clear can make a big difference also. |

what if you get someone to do it professionally, will you still get variation then? |

Depends on how good the professional is, you'll likely get a good result with no variation. However touch ups are still a nightmare, I had a silver sonata with a car park ding in one door, it was going to cost $2000 to have it fixed because the whole side of the car had to be painted to try and blend the colour in with the rest of the car, even then I was told there would likely be a noticable difference. I'll never have a mettalic paint job again

so, in other words, its better off just going with the normal non metalic paint then...even though it doesnt look as good. easier to touch up etc.. |

That would be my advice yes, the mini does have the advantage of being small though so as long as there's no rust removal or panel beating a complete respray doesn't cost alot, especially if you do all the prep work. |

is "mica" paint metallic?? or is it something else, cos when i've seen it, it looks a lot like a metallic paintjob

Hmmm, I just resprayed some damage at the back of my Mini, metallic blue as you see in the avatar, the paint match was almost perfect! I got the local pro guys to match the paint and it was pretty damn good I must say. Unfortunately my prep wasn't so good, and the clear coat wasn't as glossy as the rest. Also, the paintjob on my car is very orange-peeled (not painted by me) and my respray work isn't! I would strip it and have another go, but the damaged area is mostly covered by the rear tail light and bumper anyway. If my damage had been in a more noticeable area then the repair may have been more obvious. Yes, non metallic paints can be easier to match, but metallic paints aren't impossible. I certainly wouldn't use it as an excuse not to paint my car in a nice metallic colour. Just think of the guys with cameleon paint! Anto. |

I got mine done in a metallic yellow by a pro. I did all the prep work myself (he said i should work for him  ) once painted there was a little area on the rear 1/4 that didnt turn out to good.
He rubbed it back and done it again and looks 100%, he said that painting with metallics is alot easier these days and any good painter will be able to repair a panel to match the rest no worries. Also i recommend using good paint, i used ppg it is so tough, i dropped a hammer on my front guard and didnt even mark it. |

I think I'll use PPG next time then! My paint is acryllic and trust me, don't sneeze on it, it won't look the same again! My brothers Bommodore is painted dark metallic green (Mitsubishi Mirage colour) with a blue pearl through it. Had the sides resprayed coz he removed the door locks. The match is excellent as is the application. I guess it varies depending on who does it - some are better than others. Anto. |

PPG brand paint is brilliant. I wouldn't use anything else! |
