Could someone tell me where the body prefix numbers can be found please.

Trying to work out how to identify a body swap. Reason being I am after a cooper s with original body. I have all the body and engine prefix numbers which are supposed to correspond with each particular model. However if they are all on the same plate I guess there is no way of knowing what the original body is. I was hoping that the numbers might have been stamped on the body somewhere like they are on the engine.

Yeah they can be found on the radiator shroud (although may be a couple out) and on Mk2's a number will be fond in the gutter at the back of the engine bay. This number will be 500 less than the body number.

Early cars have it stamped into the bulkhead, not far from the plate.

Malken,

The body number will be 4 digits - Mark 1 range 501 to 5486 approx., Mark 11 range 501 to 2806 approx. As Mick says, these no's are stamped on the firewall adjacent to where the ID plate is/was rivetted with two pop rivets (Mark 1 cars only though). For Mark 11 cars, the plate was rivetted (4 rivetts) just above the driver's side subframe tower. However, early Mark 11's were produced with no ID plate at all.

The radiator shroud number is about 500 odd below the body (firewall number) and should be accompanied by a "M2 06" number, which is often difficult to sight.

Mk2 Cooper S go from YG2S4 501 , the first car produced in May 1969 , thru to the last car YG2S4 2919 which was produced in July 1971.

Mk2 Cooper S go from YG2S4 501 , the first car produced in May 1969 , thru to the last car YG2S4 2919 which was produced in July 1971. The 1969 Mk2 didnt have any Compliance Plate fitted until December 1969 , only the prefix and car number stamped into the radiator shroud panel . Sometime in December 1969 a Compliance Plate was fitted , right thru to July 1971. The prefix and car number on this Plate should match the one on the radiator shroud panel
Mk1 Cooper S go from YKG2S2 501 produced in August 1965 thru to YKG2S2 5486 produced in April 1969 . The Car Number and Prefix (type) are stamped into the ID Plate which is mounted on the firewall just behind the master cylinders . This Car Number is also stamped into the firewall , just below the ID Plate . The radiator shroud panel has a production number stamped into it which is approximately 500 less than the Car Number and also has M2 above 06 stamped into it

Hey AJ! What about the numbers in the windscreen channel beneath the rubber strip?

Do you know anything about them? were they just on 69 cars or other MkII's as well? Mk1's?

All Mk2 cars had them.

I keep hearing of cooper s 1 1/2. They seem to be built in early 69 using a run off of Mk1 and some new mk 2 gear. I believe they all looked like Mk 1 from afar.

Any info anyone?

As Mick says , they were found on all Mk2's , I haven't seen them on Mk1

The Mk2 bodyshell started production in late 1968 sometime , which is why you find Mk2 bodyshells with Mk1 ID Plate and parts . Alternators also came in about this time I believe . Some late 1968 and 1969 Mk1's where fitted with some Mk2 parts as well , hence the unofficial name of Mk1 and a half ........
