I have Des Hammills "how to power tune a mini on a budget" that I thoroughly recommend. Even though we dont have the same abundance of 12G295 heads that britain does.

However, between Vizard and GR's articles in Watto's TME, you pretty well get all the information you need to build a very good motor.

The yellow hard cover book of Vizards is the best one - much more detail and also more expensive.

Get the yellow covered one - you have plenty of time to save up for it between now and when the young bloke goes into kindergarten

I've got both Tuning on a tight budget have read Tuning the 998. Both good, the 998 one is probably better. I disagree whole heartedly with Des Hammil's suggestion that the cheapest way for more power is to stick with the stock cam. I think upgrading the cam is one of the cheapest ways to get more power. But I guess it is one of the easiest things to stuff up as well. Hammil also does some great books on tuning SUs and Webers which are well worth a read.
Don't forget Clive Trickey's Tuning the Classic Mini, which is a great read but probably considered quite out of date. Recently out of print too I think?

I wouldn't recommend Haynes big book of Fairy Tales on the BMW K100, nowhere does it have information on pocketing Mini pistons or relocating stud holes or anything... useless!

I love all the original Minis...

Preparing and Racing your Mini with Beanie (Sollis) is a good book too.
