My gearbox crunches when changing down from third to second and even does it when you double clutch sometimes. So it needs a rebuild, I got a quote of 1250 ![]() |

I got a rebuilt gearbox from a mini specialist here is SA $750. That included full rebuild or a 4 syncho Mini K box with Cooper S output shaft and a 3.444:1 diff. All full recoed. $1250 is a bit much I think especially when ur providing the gearbox casing etc. |

Total cost (including the price of the motor as I bought it from them with the rebuild cost facotred in, I had to wait for it to be rebuilt though) was $3250. $2500 was the morot and head and the clutch was included in the gearbox price (Cooper S clutch) this particular mini specialist do good deal on 1275 motor and gearbox packages. |

So it needs a rebuild, I got a quote of 1250 ![]() $1250 is alot of money, but you have to look at what you are getting. A Mini gearbox is fine, how much power are you making? Boosted mini's RED850 makes 160HP on a standard mini K box with no problems. It about how you treat it, a rebuilt box will treat you well for years to come. slinkey inc wrote: I got a rebuilt gearbox from a mini specialist here is SA $750. All full recoed. $1250 is a bit much I think especially when ur providing the gearbox casing etc. It depends what the term "fully rebuilt" means to you. You can go well over $750 on PARTS alone if the box is knackered. You'd have to ask yourself how "rebuilt" it is.. Taken from another thread: TheMiniMan wrote: ...take (for example) a genuine leyshaft (not a cheapo non gen one) at about $100 , then 3 leyshaft bearings (approx $60) , then a double row & a single row mainshaft bearings, (chunks $$$ there like maybe $160),,, then 4 x syncro rings at over $50 each now, ($200),,,then maybe a 2nd gear (probly $100 ---2nd hand if you`re lucky) ,,,then a full gasket & seal kit ($40 ish) ,,,then the diff ($ ??? could take a few hubndred to fix up) ,,,then the outrigger bearing $50-ish & drop gears -idler bearings etc.
So there you have possibly well over $1000 just in bits & pieces,,,not counting labour charges. See here: http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20422&highlight=gearbox Search is your friend ![]() |

I've got all the reciepts. has many new parts but eyah if all the gears are smashed apart then the rebuild would be much more expensive. Also the motor came from their cooper S that was burnt when they had a workshop fire, the gear box didn't though so they just wanted to make some money back and see the aprts that weren't in the car when it was burnt to a good home. |

The biggest killer of gearboxes is the nut behind the wheel. Drive like a lunitic and dump the clutch etc and it won't last. |

you could probably get away with putting a new 3rd gear synchro in.. i would recommend doing everything that needs to be though.. i got a quote from a mini place for around $1200, drive in drive out. |

Hi morgan is that quote to remove engine/trans unit and split engine from trans or are you going to remove engine/trans and split yourself. If you are going to just take box in then $1200 bucks is way too high if they only going to replace 3rd gear cone i did a 2nd cone job the other day for about $275 they brought gearbox in only. But if they are going to remove engine unit and split/replace all the cones/ bearings/laysharft/seals/gaskets/ and selector forks if needed then $1000/$1200 is not too bad dive in drive out.Keep in mind that they will most likley ring you when they have got it apart and tell you that the clutch will need replaceing too Add an extra $100/$150 for that Cheers mason |

Thanks for that guys, the quote was for taking the motor out and replacing everything that was in any way damaged. Any way I was talking to a friend of mine(mechanic) and he says he can do it and I could help take the motor out (reducing the costs) see what extent the damage was in the gearbox and then order the parts. His dad did his apprentaship at a BMC dealership and had minis, we can ask him to if we need any help too. Only problem is that it would take a few weeks. |

Only going by experiance...I payed more than $1200 for a box to be rebuilt and it was not a sertified Mechanic...you pay for what you get. As you said the 1250 is to pull engine and seperate and fix all parts. I just hope he know Mini Box's for that price. Think it this way...its your connection to the road and your natural feel to the Road...You wont it done once and done correctley ![]() |

looks like i got ripped off harcore! ![]() did you read the bit about how it can cost over $1000 in PARTS to rebuild a box completely? Maybe your guy did the real deal, and you got a bargain! Is the box tight and problem free now? KB |
