Well you know the cars, so you should be in the best position to chose, they both should do the job. Why would you put a poll on this? seems silly to me! Doogie |

Anything will tow a Mini so I would go with the car that will be more usefull for everything else as well. A Hilux will be cramped and uncomfortable on a long trip. A Commodore will drive you crazy with oil leaks and rattles. Get a Magna. They will tow a Mini and they will be comfortable on a trip while being fairly economical around town (better than a Commodore or Hilux) A mate works for a fleet company and he sells ex-lease Magnas for about $7,000 for a 2001 model. You can pick up earlier ones even cheaper. |

![]() Back to the original question , I say the hilux because I've done most of my towing with a full chassis'd ute and prefer it to a sedan . the non turbo diesel might be a bit slow on any hills you had to go up but it'd do the job . Which did you use and how did it go ? |

I have a commodore (VN) and its entirely unsuitable in its unmodified form for towing car trailers. Firstly, they have a coil spring rear and the coil springs don't compress evenly and consistantly. The coils tend to bow out which means it sticks the bum of the car right down and the nose right up. To the point where the front brakes lock up unnecessarily. Its also bad with night driving because of the nose up, with headlights. Secondly, the 3.8 ltr motor has heaps of grunt when its just pulling the car but lacks the torque when you put a load on it. If the commodore has the T700 four speed auto you will also find that unless you lock it into a lower gear, it will actually accelerate down hillls even with the foot off the go pedal. Thirdly, Getting the mini (or any car) is hard to get on and off the trailer because the rear of the trailer is higher at the rear - lots of exhausts scraped or continually looking for a bank to back the trailer against. Go for the hider riding, better geared solid chassis. |
