Hi I am currently having fun restoring a 850 Austin Mini. Just wondering does anyone know how hard it is to registered these cars? It has been unregistered for 35 years. I hear there is a checklist around. Could someone please send it me? [email protected] Thanks Ruby |

As long as everything works, no oil leaks & generally tidy, you should have no real drama's getting it registed. Doogie |

Ruby Register it in Harden - not the ACT. If its like Gulgong, the blueslip-ist will check it for the normal pink slip items and then verify identification of the car. Be sure to provide a receipt for the car that shows both the engine number and the body identification number as well as the previous owners name and address (fudge it if you have to but provide a rec'pt) Like Doogie said - if the car looks okay and is clean, tidy etc and has no major mechanical issues then the inspector will probably not go looking for problems. Harden is a small enough town to know which is the right blueslip-ist to see. |

I say that because if evertything has just sat there it is a different kettle of fish to just making sure evertything is up to scratch for rego. Good advice above re regoing locally....if thats where you spend most of your time. If its just been sitting....then number one is the brakes...full overhaul/check if you value your safety. You could also think about joining a Mini club to help with advice etc NSWMCC has a branch in Wagga and we have the ACTMCC in Canberra. Private Message sent.... |

Hey everyone, Thanks for all your advice. Nah I didn't end up buying it. My 85 yr old Grandfather gave me the Austin Mini as a gift. I plan (with the assistance of my Father) on restoring the Austin Mini after my Chartered Accountant studies finish (in September 2007). It will be my project. We haven't assessed the car thoroughly for major mechanical issues as yet. Car is in reasonable condition. No rust on body. Just a tiny bit of rust in the boot where the battery was. It has been in a garage since my Pop got it in the 60's. It hasn't been registered since 1972 and hasn't been driven since then. Good advice about registering it locally. My home town (where I lived for 18 years before I moved to Canberra 6 years ago) is Harden. I spend about half my weekends in Harden with my family, whilst working as an Accountant in Canberra in the weekdays. How do I become a member in the ACT Mini Car Club? Is there regular gatherings or meetings? |

I agree with the above advice about registering it in NSW. ACT should be no problem, providing you have proof of registration, like number plates or an old rego label or some paperwork. If you don't, you won't be able to register it without severe hassles. Have had this problem before with a 65 van that had not been registered in 15+ years and had no paperwork. Since it didn't show up in their computer system (which didn't go back far enough) they wouldn't allow it to be registered. It took a lot of effort to convince them. If you do have the required paperwork though there shouldn't realistically be any difference going through rego in ACT or NSW, and in ACT you don't require yearly inspections. And if it fails in the ACT, then just cross the border and get it re-inspected there. ![]() |
