| Post subject: | rear brakes locking up when hard braking |
the car is a 1980 round nose import from kiwi land.the problem is when braking hard or in the wet the rear wheels lock up.it has a later type tandem master cylinder.i have tried loosning the rear brake adjusters,but it had little or no effect.the rear drivers side wheel dosnt even tighten or lossen the drum just slightly crabs.any help would be wonderfull as in the wet the rear tyres try to overtake the front causing sideways action.thanks amanda

Discs on the front or drums ????? After market fitment of stand from the factory. Yes we know of this and the reasons - advice depends on your answers |

check your front cylinders and then bias valve if all is in order...change your rear wheel cylinders |

The mini has a pressure limiter between the front brakes and the rear brakes so that big impressive rear brake lock ups dont happen. Also disc brake cars have smaller diameter wheel cylinders in the rear brakes so that it takes much much more pressure to lock the rears - not just a stab on the brakes, wet or dry. Drum brake mini's are tricky - they tend to react differently with cold brakes to hot brakes. Also the adjustments and the condition of the brakes is critical as you are finding out. It doesn't take much of a brake fluid seep to make the brake linings swell and have brakes locking unexpectedly. You really need someone to have a look critical look at the entire brake system - from leaking, worn or mal-adjusted brakes. To swollen and perished hoses. To worn and leaking master and wheel cylinders through to a seized or worn pressure limiting valve. There are some really good mini mechanics in each city in Australia. One of us can point you towards a good, fair and reliable mechanics to get this crucial issue right. |

thankyou but as i am a female you might have to help me understand this firstly what am i cheaking the front cylinders for leaks etc secondly by bias valve do u mean pressure reducing valve thankyou |

Amanda I am sorry - I wrote my bit gender neutral, which means I tried to answer your question as an explanation and with some advice. I did not mean to be technically aloof or condensending. But please take it to a mechanic and have them have a look at why the brakes are not functioning - there are a few reasons as to why the lock ups happen but regardless of the reason, it needs to be fixed. |
