Post subject:  Reason for Right Hand Tanks
What are everyones thoughts on right hand tanks? reason i'm asking is that poeee got me thinking about making up some plastic tanks that would be cheaper than buying a genuine article. So i just thought i'd get a bit of an opinion from everyone about what they would use it for and whether it would be worthwhile doing.

I was also thinking about making some that didn't have a filler spout, meaning that you wouldn't have to cut a hole in your shell, giving the guys and girls that want to keep their mini in original condition that option.

Also there seems to be a bit of a price range when it comes to genuine tanks, some seem to sell for over $500 and others dont sell at $400. What is the general price for a Right hand tank. I know that MiniSport sells new ones for around $700! And i think alloy ones for even more. Are long range tanks hard to come by? Expensive? Would people prefer to install one of these?

No filler hole, how would you fill them up?

Long range tanks can be sourced fairly cheaply from late model rover mini's.

i think b cos they look like cooepr s its easier to make minis look like fake s

both my cars have em, and i got change from 300 when i bought the two!!

I like the idea of doubling the mini's petrol capacity.

I have a RH tank and haven't fitted it simply cos I don't want to cut the shell. Have to have a top breather and either an internal filler or a large balance pipe between the two tanks.

That being said as it is plastic I wouldn't look at spending over $200 on it.

Again, safety and legality would be important.

i got a larger rover mini fuel tank from brickworx, it was under $150 and didnt require any modification. I highly recommend it!

i like the idea....i think by means of filling em up you just flip open the boot and theres a sort of Jerry can in there???

dunno how safe it would be in there though... :?

Safety,

If you have a newer car check underneath and you will find a plastic tank. My Commodore has a plastic tank.

Its the type of plastic that you have to get right.

Yes.... but it takes a bit of time. To make it easier, you would want a decent sized balance / transfer pipe and a good breather on the top of the right hand tank.

Long range tank sounds like it might be an option. Do they take the standard sender unit? How about the fitting straps?

AFAIK they do use the same straps and sender unit. rover tanks are only $150-200. i think you might have issues with adr's etc. im not sure.
do you have to get alloy fuel cells engineered?

right hand tanks are only for people who forget what side of the car their filler cap is on when pulling up to the petrol bowser,,, with as "S" it doesnt matter

Paul Gulson is working on plastic RH tanks . - has the mould and turning gear - experimenting with rolling rates/heat application to get it right before going into production. my tank was given to me and i fitted it straight away but still forget to put petrol in either of them :oops:
