You can buy genuine SU oil, (mini or carb specialists) You can use ATF You can use any monograde oil. 10 to 20W is best. People may say that engine oil is OK, but it really isn't in 99% of cases. Sewing machine oil , or 3 in 1 oil are also used by some. I use a mtorcycle fork oil monograde 10W. Seems to do a very nice job. |

Leyland Mini owners instruction manual wrote: Failure to keep the piston damper oil level correct may cause the piston to flutter and reduce acceleration.
Engine oil SAE20 (alternative 20/50) should be used to top up the level to 12.70mm (1/2 in) above the top of the hollow piston rod. Never use a heavy bodied lubricant ![]() |

Yes it does say 20W 50 in all workshop manual I got, but that's silly. I followed it first off and it reduces acceleration to near nothing piston won't lift up. Not even worth trying IMO. ATF (auto trans fluid) is the most commonly used dashpot and is a good midrange for winter and summer temperatures, for a normal car I'd use it and I do, but for me it's a little thin, I'm going to change to thicker stuff or thicken the ATF a bit (by mixing thicker oil with it) as my piston lifts up a bit too quickly (my car is supercharged hence this is an issue). From what I've read a bit too thick is less noticeble to to thin. |

A mate that was racing an XU1 thought that air was too thick so he tried it with the dampers removed and just blank caps. Didn't work! ![]() ![]() |
