I wasn't exactly sure where Emerald was and how big it is. The council website says 13,700 residents and if its anything like the region I live in (Mudgee / Gulgong 18,700) then its very hard to keep a secret or hide something like a stolen car. People have neighbours and friends who are usually honest.

Most theft is "intent waiting for opportunity" so act quickly before the car is stripped and destroyed beyond repair.

The police dont really care about car theft and stumble across stolen cars when they are reported by residents as being parked across a drive or something or when they pop up on a in car computer screen during a wants and warrants. So be pro-active yourself.

Spend some money and put an advert in your local paper with (if possible) a colour photo Do the advert in photoshp if you can. Print off the advert and distribute it widely around town - on telegraph poles, shops and garages and the motor repair shops. Dopnt offer a reward - plead uni student, struggling apprentice, married with heavy morgage and young family or what ever is appropriate and invokes sympathy.

It will work - when you get the tip off - go to the police and ask to see the detectives - get them to do the investigation -do not become personaaly involved with the thieves. It only complicates the legal process.

Good luck

Great advice Mike - Good luck on finding your mini. Hopefully it is some idiots wanting a joy ride and you will find your mini again relatively quickly and intact.

Keep your eye out on ebay, that where the parts will turn up. That is if they don't have a mini themselves.

My thinking was similar to Mike's. Emerald is a small town in the country. Hard to hide anything- Might be worth hiring a plane for an hour and have a look in peoples backyards  I know if they were serious strippers then it may be locked away in a shed but worth a try.

Live near the mines?

My mum's doing some consulting work up there nearly every week, so I'll tell her to look out.

And when you find him, I'll fly up and help you belt the crap out of him :)

Maybe you should give engine numbers and chassis numbers and all that stuff
to your VicRoads people (previously suggested by Een), see if they'll do a mockup ad and put it on crime stoppers or watchers or w/e it is.

That really sucks.
I get nervous about leaving my mini on the driveway, and dad tells me not to be silly, that nothing is going to happen.

But that just really sucks. just horrible.

No - dont beat the crap out of them !!!!!!

Dont engage them in any way, shape or form. Let the police do their work their way. By all means locate the car by everything that has been suggested so far.

But do not, do not go near them once you do locate the car. Tell the
detectives rather than the station police and then let them do their job. The moment you go near the thieves you leave your self open for charges of assault, harassment etc and it does seriously complicate any legal proceeding that may follow. Remember verbal abuse can also constitute assault.

Follow Wombats advice of an aeroplane, it wont be far away as its unregistered as well as stolen - no one is going to drive it far.
