Hi, Just had to remove and replace the engine breather on the flywheel cover to get to the engine steady. The breather had a little bit of liquid on the tip which smelled a bit like petrol. Any ideas what this should be? Was thinking that oil would be the most likely substance? Normal? Cheers Matt |

Ifn yer engine is tired you may be getting a little blow-by past the rings and that may account for the petrol smell.....either that, or you have float bowl leak or similar that is finding its way down to your clutch cover ![]() |

Cheers, The breather foom the top of the rocker cover also joins to the hose from the flywheel breather so could be vapours from the top of the head. Not very noticeable, methinks it is just my paranoia creeping in again. Shouldn't be blow by, it is freshly rebuilt. We'll see I guess! Cheers Matt |

Matt When you rebuilt the engine, how did you do it ??? I ask that because A series engines almost aways wear the bores oval and tapered. Did you micrometre up the bores ??? |

Bought a reco long motor from local reconditioner, sent it all to GR who stripped it, inspected, tested, did a couple of light mods, then reassembled it all. Whole power unit was built by Ken Nelson in ipswich (Mini Auto). Has done around 300 miles, still on running in oil at the moment. Cheers Matt |

Okay So the basics will be right. 300 km is still bedding in There a number of theories for running in an engine. All the race engines and my own road engines, I have run in loading up the compression by getting the car to about 40-50 kmh and then just flooring it in fourth gear until about 80-90 kmh. Doing this four or five times and then treating the engine with respect until it frees up about about 1,000 km. Obviously less kms for race engines but they are built differently but the principle was the same. An engine going wrong that early gives lots of other signs. Just an after thought - are you running a HIF carby and is it running very rich because the "o" ring on the choke has perished with our beaut fuels ???? |

if graham honed your block it should not be blow by, he takes great pride it the time he spends honing a block to have minimal if almost no blow by. My HIF choke o ring also preished after my rebuild, but u would bloody well know it, its fould ur plugs up almost instantly (but then again mine was very goneskies) |

Twin 1.25" HS2 carbs. Just a thought though, I rebuilt them recently, and it was running way too rich until I tuned it. Could be that maybe? Running in (after bedding in cam) was done with putting load on the engine in top, going up a very long steep hill. Starting at 50 and put the foot down till 100, then start again. Did this 2 times. (hill is 2km long, repeated the sequence 3 times up the hill each time!). Now I mostly take it easy, or easy plus 10% anyway. ![]() |
