Ok firstly thanks for the people that replied about my starter motor. Ive heard lots about these gemini starters being the way to go. My next question is can i just go and get a gemini starter motor and will it bolt straight in. What year gemini am i taking this starter out of for this conversion if anyone can help?????. The wiring wont be an issue at all.

early gemini as long as its 9 tooth, try a weber as well

It wont bolt straight in. You will need to elongate the mounting holes with a round file.

It is not quite as easy as people are making out. It is very easy to make it fit but the second part is getting power to it. Some people get stuck on this bit if they have little knowledge of electrics.

You need to bypass the standard solenoid.
You need to run the key wire from the old solenoid to the new starter.

Morris - are you saying to bypass the standard gemini solenoid or the standard mini one? Shouldnt both solenoids do exactly the same thing??

You bypass the original, because the Gemini one throws the pinion ito mesh, then spins the starter.
Put the white/red wire onto the Gemini solenoid spade, and the original starter lead onto the battery lead stud, so it's live.
All the other minor wires stay where they were on the battery stud of original solenoid.

Overheard tonight...."a lot of Mini racers" are running Jackaroo starters (later technology than Gemini)..

When I bought mine, I went looking for the older rear wheel drive Gemini's (I think their code was TD TE or something like that). I happened to luck upon one which had been reconditioned (or bought new) within the previous 2 yrs judging by the date stamped on it and general condition.

File the holes inwards until the starter mounts into the position correctly (this takes a bit of trial and error, but isn't hard. Then sort the wiring as people have described. I used one of the standard two poles on the mini solenoid to "join" the lead from the battery to that of the starter and wired the gemini solenoid as above.

If he hasn't mentioned it already, Doc usually (correctly) advises people that if you have a round nose and a cooper S style oil cooler mounted in the normal location, the solenoid will foul on the cooler. I have a clubman with the oil cooler in a similar position, but as it sits higher than the solenoid, it is not a problem for the clubbie.

Have brand new starters already modded for you and include wiring instructions to get rid of mini solenoid.

Mine was $125 about two years ago....

Damn good deal whichever way you slice it.

Jackaroo = big flywheel = fast starter motor speed = good for high Compression minis

can you fit a rover (A+) starter to a non A+ engine?

They fit, but are noisy.
