They come up on here from time to time.
However I have imported about 10 over the last few years from the UK and the US. They were all off ebay.

The majority of them came from the US where they came off MG 1100's. The americans knew what they were but its a dimishing market there as most of their engine are becoming big bore.

The heads cost about $50 to sea freight and it takes about eight weeks to get here. Air freight would certainly be quicker but my wife shares my cheque book. No more said.

i bought one from ebay, a few days ago for my 998...

Come with cooper s extractors, twin stombergs double valve springs (apparently head is complete), allow rocker cover and a few other small bits and pieces.................... come from NZ originally off mg1100, paid like $400 for the lot.

I thought i got a pretty good deal because on ebay they ususally go like $300+

At one stage I was looking for the 295 Head and was bidding every second week on Ebay...They always went over $300 and was just out of the price range specialy when you don't realy know what had been done to it.
Since then my 202 head has been tickled and been Shaved to its life. It Hold up to other engine that have 295 heads and this has been proven on the Dyno Days. Would I chase a 295 head again :?
I have a Spare 202 head ready to be modded by GR as he gurantee to get better results out of a 202 than a 295 head
This is just my 2c and what I have and will do
Its your choice and what you do withyour money

Jim, you are correct a well modded 202 will be better than a 295 head, but to do so properly without calling in favours and getting bargains will cost you 600-700 where as a 295 can be picked up for 300-400, granted you never know if it is servicable, but most will bolt on and be better by far.
Dyno day proven is my traveller, std bore 998 std crank 32.6 HP at the last dyno with a std cam. That is also with a std manifold. on that day is was the best of the 998's so yes a 295 head can't be all that bad.

Cheers
Aaron

I am sure GR is correct when he says a better result from a 202 head. He masterfully shapes and flows those heads.

However, his work comes at a price. A 295 head does give bolt on improvement and its an instantly noticable improvement. Its a factory cast head and not polished, massaged shaped. It is still a better head than any other small bore head that has not been modified.

It may end up costing less than half the cost of a GR head for a pretty good performance improvement,. However, dont forget, any second hand head should be reconditioned by a good reco shop. A series heads wear valve guides, almost always are warped and these days require unleaded exhaust valve seats. Adds to the price.

One thing you have to watch with a 295 on a normal 998 or 1098- they have a BIG combustion chamber, as they were used with flat top (Sprite) or D-top (998 Cooper) pistons.
If you just bolt it onto a 998/1098 you are wasting potential HP- really they need decking a bit first..

and this is my point...I could not put a head on..just purchased with out checking everything on it. Most of the time for a 295 head its bear and you will nead a crack test and replace this and that. If I have a choice I'm doing it to a 202 and Pay $800 for it and get better than a Maybe head
Additional at the last Dyno day (last Year) I proved that a 202 head can beat a 295 head and it was a GR head at that

Jim no one is disputing a 202 is a good head to modify, but a 295 IS a good head. GR will still tell you there's nothing wrong with them and as a bolt on performance gain it is still a good cheap upgrade. I agree if you have $800 to spend then a 202 is better to modify, but a 295 is a cheaper option, even with a $30 skim of the head

Cheers
Aaron
