Just picked up a new project, couldn't resist :o and on removing a few things to see what needs doing, find it is better than first thought. Anyway, I'm after a bit of info on it as it is an oddball car. At least all of the original logbooks, hanbooks etc; came with it so it is a starting point. The dealer identification for it is a Mini Super Deluxe but the compliance plate body number applies to the Mini S as does the engine number.

However there are some significant differences to the S variation in that there are no extended wheel arches nor flares and the seats are a velour material. S wheels have been fitted on the stepped drums.

The interior also has standard S instrumentation and radio.

It was originally painted in an orange colour,

but has since been painted red.

After market flares (the screw on variety) had been fitted but I removed these to check the wheel arches and also for any sign of rust. Everything else is pretty much standard as per the owners manual. Remote style gearbox, reversing lights, auxilliary position on ignition (actually works) and hydrolastic suspension which on the surface seems to be pretty good (car sits right height all round). Surprisingly it is in pretty good condition, motor and gearbox rebuilt about 5 years ago :D . Must have done the job right as it blows no smoke, gets up and goes for an 1100 motor with an 1'1/4 carb and hasn't left a pool of oil on the garage floor. So far the only problems I have found with it are that there are no brake lights (faulty switch), no reversing lights (fault in the wiring from switch to lights) and only a single speed on the wipers and no self park, since found to be the wrong wiper motor. This has been changed and the wiring corrected on the switch (had been modified to suit single speed motor). So as you can see, I think I did alright at a fair price.

If anyone out there can shed a bit of light on the details of a Mini Super Deluxe, I would be really :D .

What you have there is a Mini S. But it is a very, very early Mini S.

022 = Mini S (and before that it was the Clubman)
A = Compliance code = bugger all as far as I can work out!
2S = 2 Door Saloon
2 = Level of trim. A normal S was a 1, a better S was a 2 (later on the SS, Sunshine and the LS got 3 and 4)
M = Manual Gearbox
10 = 1100 motor
531 = car number 531 (-500 = car number 31, I told you it was early!)

There were a couple of different levels of trim in the S.
My guess is that the dealer called the car a Super because of the S and the better trim was the Deluxe pack so that = Super Deluxe.

Thanks for that Morris1100, I knew I could get an answer from you. They were my thoughts about it so you have confirmed this for me with your detailed description. I knew it must have been one of the very early ones for it not to have flares as the Drivers handbook covers the Van, Mini and Mini S and has pictures of each model with the S being shown with flares. This was published 2/73 and describes the fitment for each model. I'll retain it in its original form except for the upgrade of brakes to Cooper S. Just have to decide on a colour for it.

Sure does look like a S to me...Looks like My first Mini...Except I didn't have 3 Dials but two and no Radio

you just need the Plastic Flares

I thought I had a Pic in my Photo Bucket...hmmmm...Must be on a Dic Some Where :roll:

I wonder if one of the previous owners knocked the flares off and stuck on the cheapies?

The wheel arches do not have the extended lip that the S flares sit on and held in place by the chrome side strip. I have almost stripped the car back to a bare shell today, only RH door trim and fittings and the motor to go. There is no evidence that the S flares were ever fitted and it is for tthis reason that I am a bit puzzled by the car.

being so very early, you can expect some oddball features as the factory got them sorted out. That car would most certainly be in the first week of full clubman S production, possibly even a pre-production model.... so maybe it was destined to be an S, but becamee a standard one, or maybe the buyer asked for an S but didn't want the flares.... or ... or...

I reckon you could make up any story you wanted and it'd be as true as anything else known about the car after 35 years ;)

slinkey, I don't think you can tell the original colour unless the sticker is present, or you can find traces of it, as per the paint under the dash in the photos... this one was Cadiz? or Home On Th' Orange?

Umm, that photo is a fake. The car that they say is an S is really a GT. They edited the badge. Maybe that is why they fitted flares? To match the photo in the book. :shock:

Well Morris 1100, you are right yet again. Same picture in my book but as you say, the badge has been edited out and the notation on the bottom RH corner says"Leyland Mini S sedan introduced February 1973. Check page 16 "wheels and tyres", the graphic for the S models doesn't appear to have a flare, or in your case, the GT.
