| Post subject: | Tank removal |
I will try again this week end to remove my gas tank. I have remove everything according to the manual except for this "THING" that goes from the tank to under the car. I have try all the tool i own to remove it with no luck. I have no idea what this thing is call... It's some sort of fume exhaust for the gas tank. It's right under the tank and impossible to get at. It also look bended. Any help woul be appreciated. Thanks Louis |

sounds like your talking about the tank drain plug. If it has a 10cm metal tube coming out of it. Just cut the tube off with side cutters and then you should be able to remove it. The tank will drain what ever gas you have left in it so be ready with something to drain into.. Good idea to remove battery if you havn't already done so. Once you have the drain plug out the tank should come out relatively easily. I did it to mine about 6 weeks ago. Hope this helps. |

it's actually screwed in... needs a small but DEEEP socket to undo it... i can't remember what size... |

the metal tube was a great idea but totally impracticle. Its purpose was to neatly drain the tank when you loosen the plug. The fuel quite nicely flows down the tube into whatever you have waiting under the car. The reality is that unless there is a special tool, (help somebody who knows), you cant get the blessed thing done up tight. My old one looked very clagged and dodgy so I bought a new one and when I was done putting the tank back in I ended up snipping the pipe off the new on so I could do it up. Just use side cutters or pliers and cut it off as far up the tube as you can with out damaging the plug itself. I think thats pretty hard to do though. |

Just rember what ever you cut expect to fix it. I'm with Cushy..I dont know the Tank but I would say its got a tape of some sort and you may just need to angle it the correct way or remove somthing. put the arse on axle stand's and look from the underside and with good light have a proper look. Its amazing wha you can learn |

Beter idea, do you have a 256 magnum i can borrow  Get you point cut it as far down as you can but make shure youcan put it bac right

if this is the same as mine there is noway known to mankind that you can angle the tank to get it out. I understand that some tanks can be jigged around to get out but not all. Make sure the straps are all undone. Unscrew the drain plug. Empty the tank, and please, please take the battery out before you do this. If you cant get a spanner onto the plug because of the tube, then cut it off as high as you can, again without damaging the plug. If you feel that you would like to fit a lovely new drain plug after you have done this then they are easily purchased. If you didnt have a spanner to get the old one out you want have a spanner to put the new one in any tighter than you might be able to do it with a pair of long nose pliers, back to square one. side cutters again. |

oh yeah, the drain plugs work perfectly okay without the tube, just not as neat. |

I use a spanner to do up and undo that drain pipe underneath, and never had an issue about leaking or whatever, I don't like it though, it's just antoher thing to undo when the tank has to come out. I drain from the back of my fuel pump in the subframe, can drain both tanks that way.

I made up a tube spanner to remove this. Just got the right sized socket and welded it to the end of a long enough tube, a hole drilled across the end for a bar and hey presto, it's out. Cheers Steve |
