Post subject:  Fire in mini!
My mate thought it would be real nice for them to make me an ariel out of a metal coat hanger, but it didn't help so i tossed it in the boot.

I was driving up the lane to work on the far this morning. Stopped to reverse and smelled a different smell that was not the normal oil buring smell of the mini. I had about 4 crunching attempts to get the mini into reverse and finally it went. And i turn around and smoke everywhere :shock: :shock: :shock:

So i jumped out quickly whacked open the boot and FIRE :shock: :shock: :shock: HELP

Well all is good just a charred boot, but the coat hanger had contacted the battery terminals and gone bang. it caught alight an old cloth and an empty oil container, and was happinly burninig away, So that was very interesting.

At the time i didn't know what was going on, and i was scared. It was near the fuel tank, and at the time i didn't know what had happened. but it was harmless in the end. It scared me alot.

Coathanger would have glowed red hot- nice for lighting fires...!

Mini Mad had the same event a while back, only it was with the Mini jack. Dead shorted the battery and welded to the terminals. I had to cut it off.. and the battery was dead meat. Stuffed it totally. :lol:

Moral- for safety, you really do need some sort of insulation to cover the battery. Either original cover, or a hunk of carpet, or plywood, rubber, whatever.
I find carpet is good, doesn't make things sweat like rubber does. :wink:

NO 1 rule in the minis.......carry a FIRE STINGUISHER, heheh

Once bitten twice shy....Your a luck Man and a grate warning to everyone else. I must admite When I change Batters (manytime) bolting the brackets back in they are very close to the terminals and I have a habbit of hitting the body with the spanner :?
Get a nice size piece of rubber mat for the boot floor

heres a nasti little story about batteries.. when i worked for Caterpillar (which has a 2 battery 24v system. one of the blokes shorted a spanner from the battrey to earth via one of those old expanding metal watch straps... it almost instantly became a heater ellement and statred melting his flesh as it got tighter. he had to get the watch surgicaly removed.. if you see anyone working on their car wearing one of these things tell them this story..

Jewlery of any kind is a no no , I'll never forget the first place I worked where the boss was just doing some mig welding and a blob of hot weld splashed onto his wedding ring, melted right down to the bone :shock:

Yeah I uttered something similar. The article makes me sound like a complete pansy, but when you got a mini petrol tank in your hands and it is sending an 8 foot jet of lit petrol I thought dropping was the best thing to do... :lol:

Must be a thing about AUSMINI and car fires!!

My wife's beloved Jackaroo Turbo Diesel caught fire (engine bay) while being serviced at the dealers two weeks ago. Not sure exactly what happened, but the damage is pretty severe. I'm pretty certain it was incompetence, not a fault with the car!

The car is written off and the dealer's insurance is paying for it. I haven't got a payout figure yet. As you can imagine, I'm pretty pissed off!! :evil:

it was a sedan with twin tanks and no rust, still after it had been rearended (which is why it was in the garage in the first place), it was pretty much a rightoff. Still the look on my parents faces when they came home PRICEless :twisted:
