What is the difference between the new style seals (with locking strip?) and other seals? Rang up one mob and they said about $150 for the window fitted. Seems like a good option and takes all the trouble out of fitting a window - but is the window seal they use inferior?

You can buy them direct from O'briens - its a bit cheaper than from a secondary reseller.

Just a tip for young players, when you get a windscreen fitted for $160 they will use your old seal.
You need to buy a new seal and get them to fit it with the new screen.

I got mine done a couple of months ago for $195 fitted but that didn't include the seal. This was a new laminated, tinted windscreen

I was told that with the older cars its much cheaper to source the new seal yourself.

Fellow in the glorious West of Australia had them with the tinted top for 120 a while back. I think he was advertising on the Mini car club website over there but can't find it...

In the 70s windscreens were very dear. Lots of screens were in the $400 range plus fitting. One of the early victories that the ACCC had was price fixing in the windscreen industry, there were two companies making screens in Aus and they were fixing prices between them, when a third company came on the scene they tried to get them to join in the big fix and they went to the ACCC. So in the mid 80s the prices dropped down to about $120.

If you are removing or fitting a laminated screen do it with the car parked in the sun and don't do it till the day warms up a bit. There is less chance of cracking the screen that way.
