Post subject:  Inertia Reel Seat Belts

Hey,

Can anybody post a pic of how their inertia seat belts are mounted in their minis - the ones on scooby - which would have been non standard for a 68 deluxe where mounted on the side of the rear pocket. I dont think they should be there though. I seem to remember my mums old clubman had them on the front of the pocket. Can anyone help.

Cheers

Gig

They should not under any circumstances be mounted to the pocket.

Hi Gig,

On my clubby, they are mounted in the rear pockets, come up through a slot near the rear ashtray then up to the usual place etc etc.

A photo won't help as there's nothing you can actually see. Hope this helps.

I bought a car like that too, You would think people have more sense. :x Hit something, that pocket will peel off the floor in a flash.
Only safe mounting is to the original spot below the door, unless you redesign the car.

my daily GT has inertia belts fitted.

They bolt to where the lap sash would have been mounted to.

You end up having the reel + the return belt bolted into the same hole. The pilar mount is the same as lap sash.

The seat 'just' clears the reel. VERY close though.

One thing to watch putting these in early cars- as pointed out before, an inertia reel belt puts 2x the force on that top mount in the pillar. It is acting as a snatch block (ie pulley).
The pillar was reinforced when the Mini K came out, but I'd be careful with early ones.

I knew the side of the pocket was wrong - I thought there might have been a proper mounting point on the front pocket on the clubbys - OK well it does solve a problem I'll just use the original anchor points.

Thanks

Please dont selectively read. read what Doc just said.

Please dont fit inertia reel type to early minis. The way they are mounted increases the mechanical advantage. Simply put, a clubby has a different B pillar. On an early model roundie, fitting an inertia reel is a good way to pull the B piller in onto your head in a bingle. The early B piller was not designed to take the load that a inertia reel belt can produce.

I took out my inertia belts on my LS1275 about 3 weeks ago. They are in fact placed inside the front of the of the back pocket and have got a good strong bolt attachment throught the B pillar.

A bit of a PITA to get out (haven't tried to get back in yet) as they need to slide towards the back of the pocket and up through a tight slot/gap.

You'll also need to draw out a lot of the belt on the winding mechanism in order to get a rachet in where the bolt is found (via the round hole located at the bottom and front end of the pocket.

Ahhhhhhh :?

How does it differ from a static lap sash to a retractable lap sash?

:?

If anyone has ever done a 4wd drive course like in the RFS or a 4wd club, the mechanical advantage of pulleys (snatch blocks) is dramatically demonstrated by using one or more pulleys to winch cars up steep inclines or out of bogs.

Each snatch block doubles the force it exerts and an electrical winch can easily drag a vehcicle weighing several tons - like a bush fire truck for example.

Exactly the same thing happens with the inertia reel seat belts. A mini specialist would spot that instantly in a rego check even though an ordinary mechanic might not.

The real issue is that the early B pillars were simply not designed to take that loading in the event of an accident. It creates a side intrusion effect in even a relatively minor accident. Remember side intrusion is what killed Peter Brock

Makes sense now.

Maybe retractable seatbelts should be banned in vehicles that were not designed for it?

Maybe, but the Klippan retractable ones I got were listed for ALL Minis...

awww Doc !!!!!

The cosmetic industry is about to taken to task (finally) for making claims without research and substantiation.

I think the klippan people simply tested their belts on a suitable mini and just assumed all minis were the same.

Having said that - what is your opinion. ???

I would fit retractables in a car for my wife knowing that she is less likely to be involved in a prang than me. The ease of her moving around overides the risks. However I frown upon under 25's (at least red P platers) fitting them.
