Don't do it! The ride on hydro mini is so much better, and my understanding is that there isn't much in it between hydro and the dry when it comes to handling at the limit. Do a search on here, this has come up heaps of times. ![]() |

I had no trouble outhandling one up Scenic Hill out of Lithgow. With my hydro. ![]() I have one car converted to dry, with Konis all round. I wish I could convert it back, but they butchered the subframes... ![]() |

Handling is about spring rates, shock rates, allignment, geometery, etc. What difference will dry or hydro make if you have already changed the spring rate (with bump rubbers) the shock rate (with external shocks) The geometery and allignment will remain the same. Hydro cars have a lower centre of gravity. (they also weigh more) ![]() Some people get a bit mixed up as to how hydro works, they think that the suspension works by passing fluid from front to back. So if you make the hole smaller it will make the suspension stiffer. ![]() |

I'm running hydro with front shockers and competition bumpstops too. My mini mechanic suggested that if it was his car he'd convert it to full dry setup. ![]() |

I'm convinced that in the future hydro cars will attract a premium as more and more of them get converted. |

From what I have heard, this conversion doesn't improve the ride, and the handling is 'different', but not in a good way. Haven't driven one like that tho! The other thing to do is fit a rear sway bar. Hydro is generally believed to handle better, racers bin it for weight savings and the 'reliability' of rubber. Hydro rules, keep it linked the independant valves idea is not sound. |

Everyone keeps saying keep the hydro it is a better ride, well I recently started driving a van with dry suspension (with 40 year old rubber cones) and it has quite nice ride quality thankyou very much. Handling isn't much improved mainly due to terrible tyres on the front. Much less tendancy to oversteer though. As for putting individual taps on the hydro, seems pretty pointless to me, either convert it to dry, or leave it as it is. |

The only time I've driven a Hydro Mini was the first time I drove a Mini. It was a test drive, and I was learning too many other things to notice what the ride felt like. Like how to change into 1st on a three synchro box (didn't crunch once). ![]() That said, Hydro can't be all bad. Think about it this way - it wasn't ditched on the Mini because of handling flaws, it was ditched because of cost, manufacturing and reliability reasons. Odds are those reliability problems were down to the available materials and production technologies. Others could confirm this, but I'd imagine the Monte cars were all hydro - didn't they have to be exactly the same specs as those on the showroom floor (although with blueprinted motors)? And all S's were hydro? If not, doesn't legend also state that a showroom S was tested back to back with the 66 winning (but disqualified) car, and the showroom car (which would've been hydro) was faster? Leyland continued with the concept, and the MGF was the last of their cars to use it. 25 years after it was taken off the Mini. ![]() ![]() ![]() I wish the bloke who last owned my 69 hadn't converted it to dry... ![]() ![]() |
