I'm assuming it's a pre 69 roundnose ? They don't have "VIN" numbers as such since they were before compliance plates , they use the body number instead which is what became the vin number really .

EDIT , just re-read your post , the body number will be either stamped on the firewall or the radiator shroud and should match whats on the ID plate (unreadable on yours ?)

the vin number has about 6 numbers stamped on the id plate, the rest just blank..

the number on the radiator shroud wouldn't be exactly the same as the number on the firewall and ID plate would it? mine isnt anyway. my firewall number matches the ID plate however the number on the radiator shroud is about 100 out.

thanks for that :
i thinki may be in the same bout as this guy, my id plate reads YMA2S1 and then 8Y/U/H13517

my thinking is it may be a 850 (this web site seems to indicate this http://www.minis.com.au/CAR_TYPE.HTM).. no stamp on shroud

Questions.
is there any way to read the VIN number off some other part of the vehicle i have old receipts for my car: the VIN number is 16 numbers long, is this correct. i would like to be abl to confirm this.... my id plate only reads YMA2S1..

My two stamped numbers on the firewall are not listed on the id plate, there is no match anywhere i can see.

anyone can help would be sweet...

Yes that's an 850 number and the body number is all you need for the vin . At some stage in it's life someones quoted YMA2S1 then the car number (BMC reference number) then the body number as they are all listed on the plate . I'll get back to you later with an approximate age from the engine number , what is the number on the firewall ?

firewall numbers are 2.:

Under ID Plate =
I beleive this is the body number... its the only visible number on the engine bay once the plate is put back on. however the last number is lightly stamped...

On an old receipt they have listed the VIN as all the numbers above YMA2S1

My question is why aren't either of the body numbers listed on the plate,,, or does this not happen? Cheers. this is starting to make a little more sense.

I'm not even going to hazard a guess as to what's going on with the numbers on the firewall compared to the ID plate but I can tell you it's a September 1964 built 850 if that helps .
