Hi y'all

I'm pretty excited as I just bought an 1100 off ebay for less than half the price it would cost to fix mine, but I just got asked the question...

What if it's stolen?

So a couple of questions for the more experienced than me:

1) How can I tell if it's stolen? I'm in Sydney, the motor is in Brisbane - we have REVS in NSW for encumberances on vehicles, but is there something similar in QLD that you can plug in the engine numbers and check if it's legit?

2) If I have a receipt from the seller (which I would), would it matter once rego time comes around if the engine number pops up as stolen as I have proof that I paid for it?

Thanks, hope someone can help!

hello!

AFAIK if you have proof you paid for it you should be right, but if you go to register the car and it turns out the motor is hot, the original owner will probably want it back now that it has re-surfaced, and i dont know if you will be able to get your money back or not.

of course, if you have the sellers details then it should be traceable. that is if the details are ligit.

the other thing you need to consider is that, as you ahve purchased he motor unseen you don't REALLY know what it's like, it mioght run but really really poorly. do you have a link to the ad?

I'd say if it comes up stolen, they'd take the motor off you as its stolen property.

They'd probs make the seller refund all monies or make you pursue it in small claims court.

Just make sure you have the engine number linked to ebay - ie: get the seller to email it to you in ebay.

And secondly make sure there is a hand written reciept with the same number and a drivers license number.

this is the link to the ad in ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... L:RTQ:AU:1

apparently all new or reco'd bits - unfinished project so selling up. Hell, he might well be someone on ausmini for all I know... Hope it turns out ok as mine was quoted $1600-$2000 just for the bottom end work (head's already done), so I thought $650 for the lot was a BARGAIN!

But is there a register of some sorts for stolen engines???

I highly doubt it's hot, and to tell the truth the thought never even occured to me, but my Dad is driving over to pick it up this weekend and one of his apprentices said they would never buy a motor off ebay as it's probably stolen, so of course he has come back to me and asked how one would know if it is or not...

I bought a laptop off ebay that turned out to be stolen. A detective from NSW police rang me up and I gave them the model and serial number. I asked "What happens now?" and he said, "Nothing its too far away". I've still got it.

I doubt that engine is stolen, unless it got nicked from an engine reconditioning shop.

I agree the probability it is stolen is low. I think the only way of checking conclusively is to check with the Police. REVS cannot be relied on as it is primarily a facility for recording encumbrances and not stolen property, as I understand it, and in any event you won't be able to do a proper check with just the engine number.

Try the police or your local motor registry and explain you're buying it from interstate and want to make sure . I went into the Gunning police stn when I bought the sports850 and asked the copper there if I could check that it wasn't reported stolen and he said a NSW registerred car would show up on a revs check (I'd already done a revs check on it but wanted to make sure...) if it was stolen as well but checked the number plate for me anyway without telling me anything about it . It went along the lines of "number plate ?" "RQO... (can't remember it now)" , "what is the car?" , "it's a green 1962 Morris mini Sports850" , "it's registerred and we aren't looking for it but that's all I can tell you" , "that's all I wanted to know , thank's" .

just ring QLD transport or the QLD cops and ask them to check their stolen vehicle register.... easy

From experience, this is what I can offer the original question.

REVVS will not tell you if a car (or engine) is stolen. Only if there is finance owing on the vehicle.

The cops can tell you if a car or engine is reported stolen.

You also need to be aware that if in the past someone did an engine swap, but failed to advise the RTA, then your new engine will show up on the RTA system as being fitted to another car. You will have issues getting the car registered with that engine if that is the case.

Hey clubmn, yep bought it from Melbourne in September last year. Was planning on doing a quick fix-it job to get it running and registered and it has just snowballed from there. It's now a bare shell in my garage and I have mini bits strewn about the place from brekkie to a*hole! Hoping now I have a (hopefully) running motor to go into it, the motivation to finish the strip and respray will return and I will have him back up and running in no time! Well in a few months anyway...

Half the time Vicroads doesn't know whats going on with older cars, i think you could make up an engine number and they wouldn't know the difference!

OK, well I'm officially bummed out now...

The seller just emailed me the engine number 9YEUH****

From what I can gather this is NOT an 1100cc.....

Closest I can come to is 9YEUI (so I am guessing he read the last letter wrong unless someone knows something I don't)

So what do you all think. He says it's bored out 40 thou - maybe he's saying that with the re-bore it's now up to 1100cc.

Is there really much difference?

What do you think I should do??
