I just re read Stonie's fantastic article on the birth of Hay in the current TME, it just goes to prove that the Hay mini nationals are not about the mini, but about the people who admire the mini, after all a XU1 Torana won the "1st Mini Nationals" Doogie |

Most know what the true spirit of Hay is (no, it's not Bourbon ![]() This subject reminds me - just the other night I was flicking through some old MCC NSW magazines and in the June 1969 issue the Club introduced 21 new members for that month. Only 4 of those 21 actually owned a Mini ![]() Looking forward to Hay this year ![]() ![]() Cheers |

Hay's not about winning...it's all about particpating. It doesn't matter if you are one of the organizers or one of the Scouts helping out at the Reunion Party or just doing your thing at the Memorial Hall on Sunday night ![]() And don't forget to support the local businesses in Hay that get behind the Hay Mini Nationals every year.In fact I wonder if there is a business in Hay that has supported the Event for 40years as well? |

2Ss and a Clubman - I think you'd better go back and re-read Stonie's article, again. Talking about the first Hay, and referring to the fact that a South Australian won the 1968 Mini Monte, Stonie says, "Oddly enough a South Australian won "again" - Peter Drew, who later moved to NSW and became a legend in the NSW club in his Bathurst GTR XU1". It does not say that he won Hay in the Torana. In fact, Peter Drew won the first Hay motorkhana in 1968 in a Mini De Luxe. Phillip Drew won his only Hay outright in 1977. Peter won again in 1986 in a Moke. In those early days, Hay was Minis only. Later, and as it is today, there was an increase in the number of classes to include rear-wheel-drive and non-Mini front-wheel-drive. However, the top ten outright awards are always made to Minis or Mokes only, and the Hay Heroes, which has been going for about 10 or so years, is for Minis only (Classic and new). Hay has been won outright in Mokes more often than Minis, just. Mokes won Hay every year from 1978 to 1994 (except 1989 when the event was cancelled dut to floods) Enough Hay trivia yet? Anyway, while the motorkhana is the excuse to get together, the socialising is really what Hay is about. This year is going to be a beaut, and the Watto Clan will be there in force. Cheers, Watto. |

Watto, the last 2 years a Datsun 240Z has 5th & 9th outright at Hay, much to the discust of some people, it's just a pity they can't appreciate a good driver in a good car. Doogie |

Hmmm....... Maybe I got it wrong about the top ten - but the rest is all correct. The day that a non-Mini or Moke wins the event outright will be the day it is no longer the Mini Nationals. Cheers, Watto. ![]() |
