Ohhhhh?? this engine had side plates....maybe I'm getting confused with A+1275....but, I thought all A+s were the later, no side plates, stronger block?? Hmmmmmmm :?

The only engines without side plates were the non-Cooper S 1275.

1980 on.
As well as 1100S, there's all the others of course that ran that same block with no side plates.
And the A+1275s as said.

Not just 1100S.
1275 in Sprite, Midget, Austin America, Morris 1300, Allegro, Marina, Metro, Maestro, Montego, Mini, etc. had no side plates.

By comparison they only made a handfull of 1275's with side plates.

By comparison, I'd say he's saying 'yes'.

It's the way to weed out Cooper S engine fakers. A lot of people say thier 1100S is an S motor which is a fair enough thing to say to non-mini people, as saying 1275 may not mean a lot.

But to other mini people, it's known there is a big difference between S motors and non-S.

What is the reason for the side plates? I had to take my breather sid eplate off and put an 850 one on (which is different, it looks different) and ran a rubber pipe with a tube as my breather.

The side plates are there to make it easy to remove or replace the cam followers.
But on the 1275, they made the block stiffer by doing away with them.
Downside is it's near impossible to swap cam with the motor in the car.

They were inspection plates and probably used in some service operations....but they do weaken the block.

Same car has an interesting fault....when cold, no first and second, after warm up....1, 2, 3, 4.....the clutch master cylinder fluid level was about 30mm below the lip:shock: .....I suggested he lift his carpet and see if the Master has sprung a leak
