12HD is listed as a 1300 Metro engine, eg. 1275.

Post 1970, 12H would mean 1275cc, east west. Not entirely sure about the D but it appears to be the type of 12H, not sure exactly what it is though.

<edit> Forgot to say, as this is important, I could not find 12HD09, I could find 12HD24 from a Metro 1300 HLE and 12HD26 from a pre-89 leaded fuel MG Metro.

Found it!

Metro 1.3 Saloon 12HD09, 9.75:1 compression, year 1989.

Would be a solid back 1275 as said above, I am lead to believe that ONLY Cooper S 1275s had removable tappet covers.

If anyone knows anything about the relative merits of this engine I'd appreciate letting me know but sounds OK so far!

Just to clarify - all pre A plus small bore motors had removable tappet covers.

Of the the 1275 (big bore range) range only the Cooper S type range had removable tappet cover. This did include the exotic purpose build engine range like the 970, 1071 as well as the 1275.

All smallbore A+ motors had the removable tappet covers too.

Trivia- some may ask why are these covers called `tappet covers'?
The name goes back to the old side valve engines (before OHV)- where the tappet adjustment was a screw and locknut in the top of the cam follower, which pushed the valve open directly.

Yeah sorry, i was a bit missleading, I did mean 1275 only, not talking about smallbores.
